The UN Climate Action Summit took place this past Monday, 9/23. While there were a few steps in the right direction, thereās still much more that needs to be done. Hereās our recap of the summit, feel free to read the entire article for more details.
The largest greenhouse gas emitters in the world ā China, the United States, and India ā offered either nothing or very little about their commitments to curb emissions
Under the Paris climate agreement, countries are expected to commit by 2020 to more aggressive climate plans, known as nationally determined contributions (NDCs), than those they set in 2015 when the agreement was signed. However, many countries are struggling to meet their (already weak) targets, and global greenhouse gas emissions are still rising
16-year old Great Thunberg delivered a powerful speech in which she called out major world leaders for not taking more action on the issue of climate change
Groups of investors, including insurance giant Allianz, promised to divest from fossil fuels, and new funding was announced for climate change adaptation and mitigation
A consortium of pension funds and insurance companies with $2.3 trillion under management pledged to end all of their investments in carbon-intensive industries by the middle of the century
Trump showed up briefly to the summit but didnāt speak. In addition to announcing that he wants to withdraw from the Paris agreement, he has openly declared his contempt for climate science and worked to undo policies that limit greenhouse gases
The biggest emitters ā China, the US, and India ā arenāt doing enough to reduce their contributions to climate change.
