An estimated 17,500 people every single week enter into homeless response systems for the first time And it’s easy to look at homelessness through the lens of statistics, but when we look closer, we see that it is ultimately a human story.

Most of our neighbors experiencing housing instability are facing challenges that any of us could encounter. Homelessness isn’t a reflection of someone’s character. It’s a reflection of how fragile the systems around us can be when life gets overwhelming.

At HCEB, we believe that understanding these challenges with kindness and empathy is the very first step toward building a stronger, more supportive community for everyone. Because when we support each other, we all rise.

Patrick’s Story 💜

For years, Patrick called the streets home. He endured countless nights sleeping outside, surrounded by uncertainty, danger, and even rats. One of the hardest parts of leaving wasn’t just finding a place to go—it was saying goodbye to the community and family he had built with others experiencing homelessness.

After losing a job he held for 14 years, Patrick found himself without housing and struggling to see a way forward. But through support, resources, and a chance to rebuild, he was able to take the next step.

Today, Patrick has stable housing, meaningful employment, and a renewed sense of hope.

His story is a powerful reminder that homelessness can happen to anyone—and that with the right support, people can rebuild their lives and thrive.

HCEB Board Members had the opportunity to visit some of our properties and experience firsthand the work we do every day. They connected with staff, spoke with clients, toured the places our residents call home, and heard directly about the incredible experiences they’ve had living here.

A huge thank you to our Property Management team for organizing events like this that highlight the impact of our work, recognize the dedication of our staff, and make our clients feel seen and valued.

HCEB was honored to attend the Academy of Arts University’s B.lab Final Exhibition last week.

The B.lab students shared the fruits of 12 months of collaboration with HCEB clients to design and build furnishings for the renovated Mandela Homes Community Space.

The pieces, including seating, tables, benches and art spaces, are functional, beautiful, and unique, creating a truly inspiring space for HCEB’s permanent supportive housing tenants.

Patrick’s story is one of resilience, growth, and hope. After facing homelessness and some of life’s toughest moments, he’s now focused on building a future full of purpose.

When asked where he sees himself in five years, he didn’t hesitate:
“I see myself as a boss.”

With big goals, strong determination, and a vision for something better, Patrick is proof that your past doesn’t define your future — it can fuel it.
