What happens when Black mothers follow the rules—and still face closed doors?

Ty-Licia Ho**er followed Berkeley Unified’s transfer process for her daughter. She says she was met with delays, dismissal and humiliation. Her experience raises a question that goes far beyond one family: Do Black families have real access to the educational opportunities school districts claim to offer?

Black mothers should not have to fight for dignity while fighting for their children’s education. Following the process should not mean being pushed aside.
