📱💗 From unrealistic beauty standards and social media pressures to AI-generated content and online misinformation, girls are navigating an increasingly complex digital world.

At Girls Inc. of Alameda County, we're equipping them with the knowledge and critical thinking skills to navigate it with confidence.

Through our Flawless curriculum for 8th and 9th graders, participants explore how media influences their perceptions of themselves and others, learn to recognize misinformation, and engage in important conversations about consent, digital safety, and healthy relationships.

These lessons go beyond screen time. They're about helping girls think critically, make informed decisions, advocate for themselves, and recognize their own worth, both online and offline.

Longtime partner, Benefit Cosmetics, hosted a virtual fireside chat inviting our CEO, Julayne Virgil, and four Girls Inc. of Alameda County alumnae to share our mission, reflect on the lasting impact of our programs, and explore ways Benefit employees can get involved.

Our alumnae speakers represented the many paths our young people pursue beyond Girls Inc.: Zarahana Kargbo, an art major at UCLA; Emily Diaz, a student at UC Merced; Tonia Smith, a student at Charles R. Drew University of Science and Medicine; and Dr. Jemima Ohwobete, an environmental consultant who earned her PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Each shared how their experiences with us continue to shape their lives and aspirations.

Benefit has been an incredible partner in expanding opportunities for our young people, from hosting confidence-building workshops and career panels to welcoming participants into their headquarters for career exploration, supporting fundraising campaigns, and rallying employees around our annual holiday book drive.

On Indigenous Peoples' Day, we recognize that Girls Inc. of Alameda County is located on the ancestral and unceded land of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people, including ancestors of the present-day Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, successors of the sovereign Verona Band of Alameda County.

We honor the enduring presence, history, and contributions of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and other Ohlone descendants who continue to be an integral part of Oakland, Alameda County, and the broader Bay Area.

Today and every day, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and leadership of Indigenous women and girls who uplift their communities, preserve their cultures, and help shape the future.

💗 This , we celebrate the power of girls' voices, their identities, and their right to shape their own futures.

Meet Violet.

A Girls Inc. of Alameda County alumna, Violet is passionate about using storytelling to preserve and uplift her Khmer heritage. Inspired by her family's experiences during the Khmer Rouge, she hopes to use writing to bring forward stories that might otherwise go unheard.

“Storytelling allows us to reclaim identity while preserving history and platforming voices across generations.”

Violet joined Girls Inc. in seventh grade, finding a community that encouraged her to embrace different perspectives, develop her voice, and pursue her aspirations. Now a high school graduate, she plans to study creative writing and political science, using her education to honor the past and help shape the future.

This International Day of the Girl, we celebrate Violet and girls everywhere who are using their voices to make a difference.

Every girl deserves to be heard, valued, and empowered to write her own story. 💗

Jazmine brings nearly a decade of nonprofit development experience and a passion for using storytelling, fundraising, and relationship-building to strengthen communities.

Before joining Girls Inc. of Alameda County, she served as Associate Director of Development at Girls Leadership, where she helped build donor support for programs empowering girls to use the power of their voices.

We're excited to have Jazmine bring her experience and passion for girl-serving work to our team as we continue connecting our community with opportunities to invest in the next generation of strong, smart, and bold leaders!

Do you have a donor-advised fund (DAF)? Your charitable dollars could help Girls Inc. of Alameda County unlock additional funding through !

encourages DAF holders to put more charitable dollars to work by committing to grant at least half of their fund. Participating donors can nominate nonprofits they support for the opportunity to receive dollar-for-dollar matching grants of up to $5,000, with additional opportunities for larger matches.

Girls Inc. of Alameda County’s work aligns with two of ’s focus areas: Education in Underserved Communities and Gender Equity, giving us additional opportunities to receive matching funds.
