Another fantastic E-Bike Test & Ride in the books! Last weekend, over 400 people of all ages joined us at Hayward BART to learn more about e-bikes and take different models out for a spin.

Ava Community Energy’s Bike Electric program has helped thousands of people to purchase their first e-bike. We have heard COUNTLESS stories of how this program opened up new possibilities for people. The word is spreading: nearly everybody at the event was there because they had won, or entered to win, Ava’s monthly rebate drawing.

At the Bike East Bay tent, we answered soooo many questions about how e-bikes can be incorporated into everyday life, and were happy to provide extra confidence to folks who were excited and curious but maybe needed a little nudge. Our bike instructors were the MVPs, reassuring riders and keeping everybody safe on the test track. We were thrilled to provide abundant bike education on all types of topics!

Huge thanks to all the bike shops and brands who spent the day answering questions and helping people find their dream ride. We had over 50 bikes on site!

As a reminder: the bridge path is not a “nice to have.” It’s essential, filling a critical gap along the Bay Trail, connecting 2 major Bay Area counties, and providing access to all types of folks. Road users deserve options to reach their destination, especially those without other options— car dependency hurts us all (and hurts our planet!), and creates more traffic for everybody.

Last fall, MTC, CalTrans and BCDC voted to limit public access to the Bay Shore, and shut down the bike/pedestrian trail Mondays-Thursdays. So now, instead of having a normal bridge open to all road users 24/7, our tax dollars go towards opening and closing the path a few times a week, and running a shuttle without a set schedule that doesn’t actually serve all users. Ready for a spooktacular adventure? Join us for our annual Halloween ride to G & M Farm Market LLC Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in Livermore! The ride starts at Dublin BART and goes across two Tri-Valley trails (Iron Horse & Arroyo Mocha) to connect us to G&M Farms. We'll have an hour to explore the corn maze and pumpkin patch before we head back to Dublin BART. This is always a fun one!

In 1972 Bike East Bay (then the East Bay Bicycle Coalition) was founded with a goal of getting access on the BART system, which initially banned bikes when it first opened.

40 years later we finally won all-hours bicycle access on BART, but also bike access for no additional charge on every other public transit system across the East Bay, including for e-bikes.

Bikes + transit has always been an essential part of our vision for an equitable and sustainable East Bay. But this vision is now under severe threat due to an impending fiscal cliff affecting all the transit providers in our region.

Without Measure RTM’s operations funding, the Bay Area will face a true emergency. Our public transit connects people to jobs, schools, healthcare, and to one another. It keeps our neighborhoods vibrant, our economy moving, and our climate goals within reach.

Let's get Measure RTM passed! We're teaming up with Connect Bay Area Transit to host phone banking nights at our office, every week until the election. Join us, and bring a friend! We’re looking for a part-time Advocacy Coordinator, who can help expand our work in the Tri-Valley area, support local groups and leaders, and help us create safer and more equitable streets.

If you’ve got community organizing experience, a technical transportation background, and/or strong community connections in the East Bay (especially in the Tri-Valley)-- consider applying!

This is a part-time (~20 hours/week) position with benefits. The priority deadline to apply is October 20, with a desired start date of January 5. All the info is at BikeEastBay.org/Jobs

Moment of appreciation of BIKE VALET! Since relaunching this program 3 years ago, we’ve parked . This year alone, we’ve parked 2,814 bikes at events all across the East Bay 🎉

Nobody likes dealing with car traffic or expensive parking lots: when free and secure bike parking is an option, people have more freedom to choose what works best for them.

Shout out to all the orgs who are prioritizing active transportation and inviting us to run valet. We love shouting out their events (see the calendar on slide 3), because these are events that understand bike infrastructure is worth paying for an investing in!

This whole program is possible AND always improving because Dolan Law Firm and The Zinn Law Firm believe in our vision for safe streets, and understand that reliable parking builds a better bike culture. 🧡

We've got some fun and exciting classes coming up in October! There's something for everybody.

We recently crossed the milestone of teaching 30,000 participants since we launched our education program in 2011! Come join us and be a part of the next 30,000 🙂

(Also figuratively— let this post be a reminder that you should vote YES on Measure RTM. And you should tell your family and friends to vote yes! Also your neighbors, your fellow commuters, even people who don’t use public transit because this affects them, too. More funding for transit = more reliable options = fewer people in cars = less traffic for everybody = happier cities, happier planet.
