What does it mean to demand justice? It means showing up, standing together, and refusing to let LGBTQIA+ lives be forgotten.

At Safe Place International, we believe safety, dignity, and belonging must extend beyond safe spaces into the communities where justice is being sought. We stand in solidarity with Kwakhanya Mhlanganisi’s family and community as we honour his life as a q***r young person and continue to demand accountability.

We will be back in court in November as the pursuit of justice continues. Kwakhanya mattered. His life mattered.

Q***r history is still being written—and the leaders we support are helping shape it. 🏳️‍🌈

As we approach 10 years in 2027, we’re reflecting on SPI’s journey: from shelter work in Istanbul to developing q***r leaders through The Dream Academy.

Today, that work includes 2,000+ verified graduates, 200+ verified Social Impact Projects and a reach spanning 40+ countries. Behind those numbers are people creating opportunities and change in their communities.

This LGBTQI+ History Month, we celebrate those leaders—and everyone helping them move forward. 💜

Did you know Africa’s first Pride march took place in Johannesburg on 13 October 1990—while South Africa was still under apartheid? 🏳️‍🌈

Organized by the Gay and Le***an Organisation of the Witwatersrand (GLOW), it called for gay rights and an end to apartheid. Activists including Simon Nkoli and Beverley Ditsie helped lead the way.

Pride was a demand for freedom, visibility and equality.
