The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that 57.8 million adults live with some form of mental illness. The severity of a mental illness can vary from person to person. Some individuals can perform daily tasks, including work and school, with mental illness, and some people may qualify for disability due to their mental illness.
It’s helpful to note the difference between mental health and mental illness. We all have mental health, like we all have physical health, but not all have mental illness. Mental illness affects people of all ages, genders, creed, race and ethnicity.
1. Anxiety disorders are the most common form of mental illness (Generalized Anxiety Disorder, trauma-related anxiety, phobia (fear)
2. Women are more likely than men to experience depression
3. 17% of adolescents (12-17 yr olds) experienced a major depressive episode.
