Cat Call Choir

Cat Call Choir A somewhat sardonic, slightly scornful, but non-violent, songful response to gender based violence.

Born in 2016 in the Mission District of San Francisco from the need for a more productive response to street harassment, Cat Call Choir is a group of irreverent but hopeful artists from the California Bay Area who create live performances about gender based violence using satirical song, dance, and physical theater. Cat Call Choir song lyrics come from the words, actions and mannerisms of perpetra

tors and from the stories of the people who share their experiences with us. These words are then fashioned to the tune of nursery rhymes and other widely recognizable songs. The choir's work has evolved to include many types of gender-based violence, commentary on pop culture, and an archive of songs of SoundCloud. In 2019 the choir began working with Stronghold - a Bay Area organization dedicated to anti-oppression analysis and framed by Restorative and Transformative Justice philosophy and practice. This collaboration was inspired by a desire to understand the ways in which white-supremacy infiltrates and influences our art-making, and to transform our creative process into one in which racial justice drives our work.

Who is Cat Call Choir?

Cat Call Choir is a group of irreverent but hopeful female-identifying performers who tell stories about gender based violence to the tune of nursery rhymes and other widely recognizable songs.

Song lyrics are derived from real life harassers' words, actions, appearances, and mannerisms, and from the stories other people share about their experiences of being harassed online, at work, and on the streets. Cat Call Choir mixes live music and dance theater to make the realities and tragedies of gender based violence in communities accessible to audiences.

In 2020 the choir will embark on a racial justice journey to make its performance art more intersectional. This will include ongoing training sessions with wearestronghold.org, an artist residency with The Women’s Building of San Francisco, and free creative workshops and performances.
