Mother's Day has always been a day of contemplation. I remember the 2 women that I call mother. Woman 1 was the woman that gave birth to me and lost me at the age of 1.5 - the woman I saw only once for 1 week and no more. Woman 2 was the woman that got me when I was 1.5 - the woman that raised me and gave me a foundation and chance for life in the US.
Both women sacrificed so much.
Woman 1 gave up her baby girl, did not see me grow up, did not see me get married or have children. She did not hold me in her arms, see me cry or hear my laughter.
Woman 2 gave up her freedom and good life in the US to build a Mission Station and take in other people children. She brought me and 3 other girls to the US and gave up her "easy" life. She drove us to school, cooked dinner, was called a beggar to make sure we went to private schools.
Who do I say Happy Mother's Day to? To woman 1 that gave me birth and lost me so that I could get freedom? To woman 2 that took me in and lost her freedom so I could gain mine?
It is not a competition. I say Happy Mother's Day to the woman that birthed me and the woman that gave me life. Happy Mother's Day for their sacrifice so that I could secure a better life. Because of these 2 women, Mother Augusta Tyler and Mamauah Tyler Washington, I am who I am today. Because of them, I have been gifted by the Lord to reach back and do something for the mothers and future mothers in Liberia.
So today may not be the day that others celebrate mothers, but I say Happy Mother's Day in heaven Mother - and I can hear the both of them saying thank you daughter.
