Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center

Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center The Martin Luther King Jr. The curriculum develops cultural power through reflection and action. It prepares individuals and groups to create meaning.

The Freedom Center collaborates with educational, faith-based & community initiatives to advance youth & family civic engagement, ethical leadership & economic & educational equity through personal transformation with vulnerable high-poverty communities. Freedom Center produces leadership nonviolence classes and civic engagement for middle school and high school aged youth from diverse racial and

cultural communities in Oakland, CA and the East Bay. Learning takes place in conjunction with relevance and critical problem solving. Freedom Center programming promotes academic excellence and civic leadership roles, developing common-good values of interdependence, other-interestedness, mutuality, equity, and the global pursuit of ecological sustainability. Professional development classes and seminars feature longitudinal research-based community leadership methodology and content, focused on development of trust, high-expectations, and rigor in relationships. Located on the campus of Merritt College at 12500 Campus Drive, Freedom Center offices are in “D” building, rooms 187. We welcome you to come by for a visit. For more information on the Freedom Center, for scheduling of professional development, or to nominate a young person for the Nonviolence Leadership Program, please call our offices today at 510 434 3988.

“We all have a 'Selma', a place that is considered too risky or with too much fear to be able to make change effectively. Bernard Lafayette and Joanne Bland teach us to go to Selma, to find hope in difficult circumstances by convincing the people that hope is alive and change is possible. Our first Selma might be our own family, our friends. We must have courage to face these challenges, as unstoppable momentum comes from places such as Selma.” Itzel Palestina, Freedom Center student, as stated in a Freedom Center class honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Bernard Lafayette and Joanne Bland.

The Martin Luther King Jr Freedom Center honors the lives and legacies of Dr. Bernard Lafayette and Joanne Bland, foot soldiers for civil rights who made remarkable contributions to the struggle in Selma, Alabama, the nation, and world.

This weekend, the Freedom Center was honored to participate alongside our dear friends Mayor Barbara Lee and the MLK Jr. Multicultural Rally Committee, Pastor Thompson and Allen Temple Baptist Church, Reverend Cheryl Ward and Evergreen Baptist Church, Dr. Clayborne Carson, and the Golden State Warriors. We have been reminded in every conversation and speech to work together and guide each other toward justice.

We are the ones we have been waiting for!

Happy International Human Rights Day!

We the people are helping each other develop consciousness, though the forces of racism, militarism, and poverty try to silence the truth.

We know the truth by living truthfully. Today make your neighbor some banana bread, offer a stranger a smile, or hold the door open for someone.
