On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. This day came to be known as Juneteenth and has always been more than a holiday. The day stands as a testament to and celebration of the unyielding spirit of a people.

Meet Yoriko, our new Communications Co-Lead with Latino Outdoors 🎉

We're excited to welcome her to the team and grateful for the passion, creativity, and perspective she brings to our comunidad. As someone who will help support and amplify stories through Yo Cuento, Yoriko wanted to introduce herself by sharing a piece of her own journey.

We invite you to read her story about trying something new, finding community, and creating space for others in the outdoors.

“By getting past my own fears and opening doors for myself, I could help make the outdoors feel less intimidating for someone else too.” 🚪🏔️

Join us in welcoming Yoriko 💚

Three campouts. Three regions. One unforgettable collaboration🏕️

This spring, Outdoor Afro and Latino Outdoors brought communities together across Texas, the Chicago region, and the San Francisco Bay Area for weekends rooted in connection, culture, healing, and joy.

In Texas, participants shared cultural traditions through molcajete salsa making, music, and campfire building. Near Chicago, campers explored the Indiana Dunes and even helped rescue a bluebird named Sheila. In the Bay Area, adventurers embraced rainy weather with camping, hiking, tidepooling, and astronomy activities between showers.

“This campout was definitely one for the books, the kind of gathering that stays with you long after the event has passed,” shared a Latino Outdoors Volunteer Outings Leader.

“There was a lot of smiling, getting to know new people, and reconnecting around the fire pit. I'm so appreciative of the opportunity to make these connections,” shared an Outdoor Afro leader.

Across every gathering, participants reflected on the power of being outdoors in community and the lasting friendships formed along the way.

This Q***r Caminata at Presidio Overlook brought community members together for a 6-mile hike with five scenic viewing points along the way. Curated to provide a much-needed safe space for q***r, trans, and questioning individuals, these gatherings continue to create opportunities for connection and belonging in la naturaleza 🌱

The group shared, “We are blessed in our comunidad jotería to have such iconic leaders and trailblazers!!!” Throughout the hike, new friendships and meaningful conversations emerged as the San Francisco Bay Area Latino Outdoors community continues cultivating affirming spaces rooted in joy and collective care.

Join us in celebrating Orgullosamente Outdoors this Pride Month! Events like Q***r Caminatas create affirming outdoor experiences for Latine LGBTQ+ communities year-round.

🚨 TAKE ACTION: Protect Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

Senator Mike Lee is expected to advance a Congressional Review Act (CRA) bill within days that would overturn the land-use plan for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument—a plan shaped through years of input from Tribes, scientists, local communities, and public stakeholders.

This isn’t just about one monument. 🦎

If passed, this legislation could set a dangerous precedent, allowing politicians in Washington to overturn land-use plans for protected public lands across the country.

📢 Tell your Senators: Vote NO on the CRA bill.
