RBO is dedicated to helping students build confidence and develop healthy lifestyles through running!

Running for a Better Oakland (RBO) is a non-profit organization that encourages Kindergarten-12th grade Oakland students to develop healthy lifestyles through running. By providing training and encouragement, RBO helps students build confidence and set goals, giving them tools for achievement and hard work they can draw on in all areas of their lives. RBO strives to build a tolerant, healthy, and

prosperous community. Through the discipline and rigor of a structured running program, RBO’s goal is to create new relationships, establish trust, build self-esteem, and empower students, parents, and volunteers.

Come volunteer with us at the JPMorganChase Corporate Challenge next month!

This fun challenge, which brings together hundreds of corporate teams from around the Bay Area to run and walk the streets of SF, is an opportunity for RBO to raise funds for our running programs.

Every volunteer we can bring out turns into direct financial support for RBO, so we would love to get as many members of our community out as possible! Here are the details:

📅 Thursday, September 10th (from around 6-8pm)
📍Chase Center, SF (RBO’s exact volunteer spot will be shared out closer to the event date)

We’d love to bring out as many volunteers as possible, so share with local family and friends, too! If you’re interested in volunteering, fill out the Google Form linked in our bio or shoot us a DM.

Huge congratulations to our former Youth Coach Sophia, who ran a 6:44 mile at The SF Mile this past Sunday!

Sophia trained with us here at RBO from 2023 to 2026, and watching her grow from student to youth coach, graduate from our program this past season, and still participate in local races is exactly what makes RBO and students like Sophia so special.

Congrats on a great race, Sophia! 💙👏

Registration is open for RBO’s Annual Fundraiser: Run Your Own Race! 💙

This is more than a fundraiser — it’s a room full of the people who make RBO possible. Hear directly from RBO students about what this program means to them, connect with our community, bid on incredible items at our auction, and hear from guest speakers who are just as invested in Oakland’s youth as we are, including MAGDA BOULET, Alysia Montaño OLY, Cal Calamia,
and Zagdaa Baatar.

Our Fall 2026 season is officially set! We kick off with a pre-season meeting on Sep 2, then hit the ground running on Sep 12 at Snow Park. From there, it’s weekly Saturday practices all season long, plus a Trail Run, a Costume Fun Run, and two community races to celebrate how far we’ve come — the Lake Chabot Trail Run and the Oakland Turkey Trot.

Whether you’re brand new to RBO or you’ve been with us for seasons, there’s a place for you and your family here.

Something we say a lot: you don’t have to be fast to be part of RBO. That’s true for our students, and it’s just as true for our Run Mentors. We’ve got kids who sprint and kids who walk it, and we’ve got mentors who ran track in high school and those who hadn’t run a mile before they started volunteering with us. None of that matters. What matters is showing up.

So if you’ve got a kid who says “I’m not really a runner,” or you’re an adult who’d like to volunteer but worries you’re not fit enough or fast enough — we’d love to have you!

IT’S OFFICIAL 🏃‍♀️💙 Fall 2026 registration is NOW OPEN!

Every Saturday, Oakland families show up to Snow Park for the same reason: RBO isn’t just about running — it’s about the community that forms around it, and we’re so excited to kick off another season together.

Our first practice of the season is Saturday, September 12th, and you don’t need any running experience to participate.

Fall 2026 season, we’re coming for you! 💙 Registration officially opens THIS SATURDAY, August 1st.

RBO is Oakland’s youth running community — a place where kids show up and grow as runners, where every practice has a coach who knows their name, and every family finds their people on the sidelines.

Whether your runner is chasing their first mile or their fifth season with us, there’s a spot for them in our community.

This past weekend, our RBO community showed up for The Handoff, a community relay night at Laney College hosted by Bay Fit Collective in partnership with Unseen Run Club!

Current students and their families laced up alongside alumni who came back just to run with us again, and some of our most recent senior scholars joined in, too. We love to see former students still crushing all of their goals on and off the track. We’re so grateful to Bay Fit Collective for having us out!

Fall 2026 registration is opening soon, so if you know a student who’s been curious about RBO or an adult that would love to volunteer and join us as a Run Mentor, now’s a great time to start that conversation. 👟
