Running for a Better Oakland

Running for a Better Oakland RBO is dedicated to helping students build confidence and develop healthy lifestyles through running!

Running for a Better Oakland (RBO) is a non-profit organization that encourages Kindergarten-12th grade Oakland students to develop healthy lifestyles through running. By providing training and encouragement, RBO helps students build confidence and set goals, giving them tools for achievement and hard work they can draw on in all areas of their lives. RBO strives to build a tolerant, healthy, and

prosperous community. Through the discipline and rigor of a structured running program, RBO’s goal is to create new relationships, establish trust, build self-esteem, and empower students, parents, and volunteers.

RBO Class of 2026 Senior Scholar 🎓

Citlali Morfin Romero has been part of the RBO family since 8th grade — four years as a student runner, one as a Youth Coach. Her advice to anyone in the program: don’t let motivation run your life. It’ll run out. Discipline is what matters most. After graduating from Oakland School for the Arts, she’s heading to a nearby college to study speech therapy for kids — and plans to come back as an RBO mentor someday.

Congratulations, Citlali! 💙

RBO is on the trails today 🏔️

Coach Hannah and friend of RBO Annette are both out on the Bay Area 100 right now, and we are so proud of them!

Annette is also fundraising for RBO as part of her race — she’s already at $3,300+ and donations are still open. Link in bio if you want to cheer her on with more than just vibes. 💙

This past Saturday, RBO students, parents, and coaches took over the — and it was a blast! 🏃

Running for a Better Oakland brings free running programs to K–12 students across Oakland and events like this are why we do it.

A huge thank you to the Marin Mile team for an incredible event and for being a consistent partner in our mission. And to everyone who donated to RBO during registration — you make it possible for us to support our students at races like this.

Happy from the heart of Oakland. 💙

Today we’re not thinking about pace or mileage — we’re thinking about the people who make this community what it is. Our students who show up, our coaches who give their time to support them, our youth coaches, run mentors, and volunteers who give their time week after week because they believe Oakland students deserves this.

We run better together, today and everyday!

WE’RE HIRING! 🏃🏽

Running for a Better Oakland is looking for a Part-Time Program Coordinator to help make our Saturday morning practices at Lake Merritt everything they’re meant to be — for our kids, their families, and our community.

This isn’t a desk job. You’ll be the person who shows up early, sets up the space, greets families by name, and makes sure every Saturday runs smoothly.

We’re hiring this summer so you can be part of building the Fall season from day one — not jumping in mid-stream.

You don’t need a running background. You just need to be organized, dependable, and genuinely care about Oakland youth.

We’re hiring soon — link in bio to apply. Know someone who’s a fit? Tag them. 👇

To everyone who stopped by this month and ordered a pour-over — thank you! That cup meant something to Oakland kids. 🙏

If you haven’t made it in yet, this is your last chance. May 31st is the last day to order a pour-over and have $1 go directly to RBO. Go get a great cup of coffee and know it went somewhere good. ☕🏃‍♀️

Reminder to mark your calendars for Sunday, May 31st — the Global Running Fest is back in Berkeley, and this year all beer sales go directly to RBO!

The event is free to attend, so come out, run some miles, and demo shoes from Hoka, New Balance, Adidas, and more. Trumer Pils and Best Day Brewing will be pouring, and every beer you grab goes directly toward supporting Oakland youth through running. There’s also a DJ, festival vendors, and $10,000 in raffle prizes to add to the fun.

We’d love to see our whole community there. Bring your friends, bring your family, and come celebrate what we’re building together in Oakland.

Less than two weeks out from 🗓 and if your run club has been on the fence, here’s the picture: a historic track in Marin, heats across every pace, a crowd that shows up to cheer every single runner — and an entry supported by a donation to RBO that goes directly toward Oakland student runners who are building the same thing we all love about this sport.

Donate $50 to RBO, forward your confirmation to the Marin Mile team, and run free.

This past Saturday, six of our senior scholarship students spent the morning at the — and they were part of something really special.

Alongside 78 volunteers total, the group accomplished:

📦 21,460 pounds of food sorted and prepped for distribution
🍽️ 17,812 meals worth of food ready to reach people in need
👐 228 meals prepped per volunteer

Our six students showed up early, worked hard, and gave their Saturday morning to their neighbors. That is exactly what RBO is about.

So proud of you all! 💙

Reminder: head to this month and your pour-over supports RBO. ☕🏃‍♀️

We’re halfway through May — just over two weeks left to make it happen. Equator is donating $1 from every pour-over sold at their Bay Area cafes straight to our programs for Oakland K–12 students. One cup. Real impact. Don’t let May slip by.
