urban university is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with the mission to improve the socio-economic status of impoverished individuals. We operate urban furniture & boutique, a social enterprise that offers qualty reuse furniture and housewares and clothing as a platform to deliver the Single Moms at Work Program: housing, on-the-job training and support for low-income single mothers transitioning from public assistance.

Black women carry more than potential, they carry blueprints for what comes next. 👩🏿‍🎨

Philanthropy’s role is not to redraw those blueprints. It is to trust the architects, resource their vision and make room for them to build.

What We Believe

Good People, at this point in urban university’s organizational journey, I’ve been thinking more deeply about the language we use to describe our work. Y’all know how I am about my words….

One word I keep coming back to is empower.

I now believe, we don’t empower single mothers. I used to think that back in the day, when we launched the social enterprise in 2009.

Today, I’m happy to share a refreshed belief, single mothers arrive to us with power. Trust and believe, we witness their beautiful strength, curiosity, abilities and ambition from day one.

Our role is to invest in what’s already there through paid work experience, skills, learning, housing support and access to opportunity

Invest in skills.
Invest in paid work experience.
Invest in learning.
Invest in stability and opportunity.
Invest in her journey to upward mobility and power.

This is where urban university is today, becoming even clearer about what we believe, how we work, and why it matters.
