Last week, community members from across the Tri Valley gathered for our Polluters Pay Town Hall to learn, connect, and organize around climate accountability.

As families face rising costs from extreme heat, wildfire smoke, drought, and flooding, fossil fuel corporations continue to profit while communities bear the burden. Together, we explored how Polluters Pay legislation can help ensure that the corporations most responsible for the climate crisis contribute to the costs of climate resilience, disaster recovery, and community protection.

Here's a video of the programing....

Congregational cooling centers save lives.

As climate change drives more frequent and intense heat waves, extreme heat has become one of the deadliest weather related hazards. Cooling centers provide air conditioned spaces where people can escape dangerous temperatures, access water, rest, and connect with emergency services if needed.

A ridge of high pressure is pushing temperatures 15 to 25 degrees above average.

“San Lorenzo Community Church became a part of CIPL in keeping with a commitment we made years ago to be better environmental stewards. In 1989, our church adopted the following resolution. I can’t remember where it came from, but it resonated with us to the extent that we’ve tried to live by it ever since. “We the people of planet Earth, with respect for the dignity of each human life, with concern for future generations, with growing appreciation of our relationship to our environment, with recognition of limits to our resources, and with need for adequate food, air, water, shelter, health, protection, justice and self- fulfillment, hereby declare our INTERDEPENDENCE; and resolve to work together in peace and in harmony with our environment to enhance the quality of life everywhere.”– The Rev. Drew Nettinga, San Lorenzo Community Church, UCC

"El Niño, Nature’s chaotic climate agent, has formed in a warmed-up Pacific Ocean and is expected to grow to historic strength, meteorologists announced on Thursday.

Experts said the El Niño, a natural warming cycle, should further heat a globe already warming from fossil fuel pollution and will probably turbocharge extreme weather across the planet. Meteorologists forecast it will rival – or exceed – a record El Niño that began in 1997 and helped trigger billions of dollars in damage from heatwaves, floods, droughts, tornadoes and wildfires.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) officially confirmed the existence of the El Niño, which is a warming of the Pacific near the equator that affects weather patterns across the globe. Noaa’s announcement said there was a 63% chance that the El Niño will get so intense this late fall and early winter that it “would rank among the largest El Niño events in the historical record going back to 1950”."

Meteorologists forecast it will rival – or exceed – record El Niño from 1997 and further heat globe

California Interfaith Power & Light has been a strong advocate for cleaner transportation for years. Electric vehicles are paving the way to healthier communities and reduced pollution linked to climate change. Not only has the California faith community been switching to electric vehicles, houses of worship are installing EV charging stations, which makes the choice of an EV more practical.

If your congregation is in Alameda County or San Joaquin County, you might qualify for FREE chargers!
