TOLA: The Organizing and Leadership Academy

TOLA: The Organizing and Leadership Academy Community Organizing Academy TOLA is an organizing and leadership academy. The Organizing and Leadership Academy is a four-month intensive program.

Our mission is to teach effective, non-doctrinaire community organizing and to inspire a new generation of activists and leaders. Taught by some of the most effective community, business, educational and political leaders in the East Bay, the four-month course includes several weeks of initial classroom and case-study training, but the core focus of the program is experiential. All TOLA Fellows wi

ll be assigned to at least one project for an extended period of time. The project will be a campaign or organizing effort in the East Bay. While assigned to their project the TOLA Fellows will have classroom assignments and will be responsible for attending several TOLA seminars per week. Since this is a community organizing internship, the focus of the TOLA Fellows four-month term will be practical, hands-on learning—not theory.

A few weeks ago at the Cesar Chavez Breakfast, legendary organizer Larry Tramutola spoke to a packed room about the real work of organizing—strategy, purpose, and people-power. Our interns were in the crowd, taking in hard-earned wisdom that deepened their understanding of the organizing work they were apart of.
