Volunteer-foster homes in the SF Bay Area provide safety & care to hundreds of rescued birds awaiting adoption. In 2007, all the animals in SF Bay Area shelters had at least one rescue to help them get adopted - all except for the domestic pigeons and doves. These beautiful, gentle, smart birds were being routinely killed for lack of adopters. Palomacy (originally named MickaCoo) was created to re

pair that deadly gap in the animal welfare network. Palomacy saves the lives of domestic (unreleasable) pigeons and doves by providing avian vet care, foster homes and placement into wonderful non-breeding, non-sporting homes. “Stringfoot” is a painful, often disabling and sometimes fatal condition that city pigeons are very vulnerable to. As they walk around looking for food, bits of string or hair gets wrapped around their toes or feet, forming a tourniquet that only gets tighter as their foot swells around it. They can lose toes or sometimes the whole limb, or develop life-threatening infections. And they can’t remove it by themselves.

I’ve been trying to catch this Alameda stringfoot bird for a couple weeks now & finally got her today. When string is really embedded like this, a warm water/epsom salt soak can make a big difference in being able to remove it with minimum pain or bleeding. She was REALLY mad but she’ll be ok.

We had so many beautiful photographs submitted for our calendar contest - several years’ worth! It was very, very difficult to narrow it down to thirteen finalists for the final print version.
Thank you to each and every one of you - rescuers, adopters, volunteers, artists, voters, donors and advocates! Together we are changing the course of the future for these amazing birds, from abuse to appreciation, from exploitation to adoption. We love our big, amazing Palomacy community!

Part 2! These birds are incredibly resilient and can bounce back from pretty dire circumstances. Charlie, Bravo & Delta are in quarantine, but they are starting to show a spark — good appetite, preening, curious. They will need foster homes when they are recovered. Part 1. This is a too-common occurrence. People use these birds for racing and other “sports” and keep them in stressful conditions - but when they get hurt or sick they are just dumped and abandoned like trash. These loyal, gentle souls deserve better. They didn’t ask to be part of anyone’s “hobby”.

They spend most of their day with their mate - bonding, bonding, bonding. No such thing as too close. I’ve been working on a small graphic about pigeon love & ended up with a bunch of cute pictures, so enjoy! And please consider adopting a pair of pigeons — they have so much to teach us. Please don’t turn away or just keep walking. Pigeons are tough, hardy birds but they are also vulnerable and if you see one who is grounded they are in real trouble. A ventilated cardboard box in a bathroom away from other pets, while you call for help, can make a life or death difference. Thank you for helping!
