Volunteer-foster homes in the SF Bay Area provide safety & care to hundreds of rescued birds awaiting adoption. In 2007, all the animals in SF Bay Area shelters had at least one rescue to help them get adopted - all except for the domestic pigeons and doves. These beautiful, gentle, smart birds were being routinely killed for lack of adopters. Palomacy (originally named MickaCoo) was created to re

pair that deadly gap in the animal welfare network. Palomacy saves the lives of domestic (unreleasable) pigeons and doves by providing avian vet care, foster homes and placement into wonderful non-breeding, non-sporting homes. Letā€™s Appreciate Pigeons & Doves Today!

June 13th was chosen as Pigeon Appreciation in commemoration of the anniversary of the death ofĀ Cher AmiĀ ā€” the decorated U.S. Army Carrier pigeon who died in 1919. We celebrate all pigeons and doves today, as the wondrous, intelligent, sensitive, delightful birds they are. The birds featured in the photo above are just a few of the 60 pigeons and doves rescued byĀ PalomacyĀ so far this year.

A lot of animal cruelty goes unseen. Or, in the case of ceremonial ā€œdove releaseā€, it often goes unquestioned.

I hope we can all agree that THIS is absurd and wrong, whether this was a gender reveal or some other human event that didnā€™t require birds.

Dying birds is extremely harmful to them - weā€™ve had several rescued pigeons who were left blind as a result of being dyed.

Spread the word that releasing domestic birds is never the right thing to do. Donā€™t bring cruelty to your celebrations or to your mourning. Letā€™s change the culture.

This is actually the third Class of 26 graduating from that exact same nook. I only ever see one baby at a time with this pair but they spoil their singletons and they launch them successfully. Respect and love for the feral pigeons - they are giving it their very best.
