Did you know Oakland is home to a nationally recognized, tuition-free Mandarin immersion public charter school?

Founded in Oakland in 2011, Yu Ming Charter School serves students in Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade, offering a rigorous, student-centered bilingual education that meets each learner’s unique needs.

Recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in both 2019 and 2025, Yu Ming combines academic excellence with a deep commitment to language, culture, and community. In 2019, the City of Oakland even proclaimed November 18 Yu Ming Day in celebration of the school’s achievements!

What makes Yu Ming extra special is its diverse community. Only about 20% of students enter Yu Ming with Chinese spoken at home, yet all families share a commitment to learning Chinese and growing together in a multicultural environment. Yu Ming is proud to call Oakland home and to help nurture the next generation of bilingual, curious, and globally minded learners right here in the East Bay.

Interested in joining the Yu Ming community? Learn more about their program and enrollment at www.yumingschool.org/enroll/.

Last Wednesday, the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce celebrated the Oakland Originals documentary “The Heart of Lincoln Square” spotlighting Oakland Chinatown’s very own Gilbrt Gong.

Directed by J.P Dobrin J.P. Dobrin, the documentary spotlights a park that became a center for multi-generational programming under Gilbert’s leadership and what’s more to come to Lincoln Recreation Center.

The opening ceremony featured a Lion Dance ceremony performed by the Lincoln Explorers Lion Dance Team. This performance was dedicated to Ms. Kathy Gin, a beloved leader and teacher to many and also helped lead programs at the park and children programs. She will be dearly missed. Her influence will forever live on in our local Chinatown community.
