Does building more housing actually make cities more affordable?

In our newest episode of Infill, YIMBY Law’s Sonja Trauss sits down with Alex Horowitz of The Pew Charitable Trusts to break down the research behind “moving chains” — and how new housing, even market-rate housing, can improve affordability across housing markets.

Using Zillow rental data and national housing research, Horowitz explains why cities that build more homes tend to see slower rent growth, especially for older and lower-cost apartments.

Housing advocates shouldn't have to spend hours digging through government websites just to find out what's being proposed in their communities.

Our latest blog looks at how we are using AI-powered tools like Listen Public to uncover housing proposals, track public hearings, and help local advocates support more homes where they're needed most.

Technology won't solve the housing crisis on its own, but it can help more people participate in the decisions that shape our communities.

Happy Pride Month, YIMBYs! 🏳️‍🌈

This month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and the advocates who have fought for fairness, opportunity, and access—including the right to safe, stable, and affordable housing.

🎉 YIMBY WIN!

After years of advocacy, planning, and persistence, a 33-unit affordable housing development is finally moving forward in Evanston.

Despite legal challenges and NIMBY opposition, supporters stayed the course and broke ground this past month.

The development will provide affordable homes for residents who might otherwise be priced out of the community and highlights the potential of faith-based organizations to help address Illinois' housing shortage by creating homes on underutilized land.

As Abundant Housing Illinois noted in the article, this model can be replicated in communities across the state.

California's housing shortage is taking center stage in the governor's race, and our Executive Director, Laura Foote, is helping shape the conversation.

In a recent The New York Times article, she explains that while issues like second-home ownership often dominate the conversation, California's housing shortage is fundamentally the result of decades of policies that have made it harder to build enough homes.

To really put the shortage in perspective, Laura goes on to say, “If we wanted to seize everyone’s second home and redistribute those homes, that would not move the needle.”

The housing shortage is too large to solve with symbolic fixes. If we want lower costs and more opportunities, California needs to build more homes.

Virginia's 2026 legislative session delivered some major housing wins! 🎉

Today, we're highlighting SB 531, which legalizes accessory dwelling units (ADUs) statewide.

Starting July 1, 2027, homeowners across Virginia will have a clearer path to build backyard cottages, garage apartments, and other small homes that expand housing choices and affordability.

ADUs create more flexible housing options for seniors, young adults, caregivers, and working families while helping communities add homes without dramatically changing neighborhood character.

This victory is thanks to the persistence of bill patron, Senator Kannan Srinivasan, and the thousands of YIMBYs who sent more than 7,000 emails to lawmakers. This marks another huge win for the growing movement to make housing more abundant and affordable!
