🥕 HELP SHAPE EAST OAKLAND’S FREE GROCERY MARKET! 🥬

East Oakland Collective is planning a Free Grocery Market where community members can shop for free, healthy, nutritious, and culturally relevant foods that meet their household’s needs — at no cost! 💚

We are planning to expand our current days and hours to meet the needs of more neighbors, more working families. No more long food pantry lines and wait times — this market is not a food pantry and is being designed with accessibility in mind.

📣 The market will prioritize families who live, work or go to school in zip codes 94603, 94605, and 94621– some of the most food insecure and food desert neighborhoods in Oakland.

Now, we need YOUR voice to help bring this vision to life! We’re inviting community members who need access to free groceries to take our community survey and share what matters most to you and your family.

🛒 What foods would you like to see?
🌽 What would make the shopping experience welcoming and accessible?
🍎 What hours, services, and features would best support your household?

This market is for YOU, and your input matters!

👉🏾 TAKE THE SURVEY TODAY: https://bit.ly/freegrocerymarket

Let’s build a grocery market rooted in community voice, dignity, choice, and food justice. Please share this post with neighbors, family, and friends who could benefit from free, nutritious food!

🍽️ 3,000+ HOT MEALS. MADE WITH LOVE. ❤️

Since April 2026, East Oakland Collective has distributed more than 3,000 hot, catered meals to unhoused neighbors across Oakland living curbside or in shelters.

These meals are prepared with care by Community Kitchens Community Kitchens and delivered 3 times a week directly to people experiencing homelessness—because everyone deserves access to a hot, nourishing meal and to be treated with dignity.

Food is care. Food is connection. Food is a basic human right.

❤️🌈 It was a colorful day at East Oakland Collective! 🌈🥕🍊

From the vibrant produce filling our distribution tables to the bright red shirts of the Eli Lilly team, today’s busy food distribution was full of color, community, and care. ❤️

A huge thank you to the Eli Lilly team for showing up and putting in the work from start to finish — from set-up and sorting to packing, distributing, and helping us keep things moving throughout the day. Your time, energy, and teamwork made a real difference for our community.

We’re grateful for every volunteer who rolls up their sleeves and helps us get food into the hands of our neighbors. 🫶🏾
Thank you, Eli Lilly and Company ❤️

Oakland, this is not what compassion looks like.

We are angry. We are heartbroken. And we are deeply disappointed in the City of The City of Oakland .

Two beautifully built tiny homes—created by Oakland School For The Arts Oakland School for the Arts students with the support of their parents and faculty—were destroyed by the City.

They belonged to two unhoused mothers who had been living curbside and trying to create some measure of safety, dignity, stability, and hope for themselves and their families.

The East Oakland Collective has cared for these tiny homes and the mothers who lived in them for years. We have helped with repairs. We have paid for sanitation services. We have helped move the homes when they were threatened with removal by the City. We have repeatedly stepped in because we believe that people experiencing homelessness deserve to be treated with dignity—even when the systems around them fail them.

And now, the City has destroyed them.

What makes this even more painful is that the mothers were not given enough time to move their homes. The tiny homes were destroyed on the second day of abatement just as the moms arrived to save their homes.

One of the mothers recently gave birth and is temporarily staying in a shelter. When her shelter stay ends, she cannot return to the tiny home that once provided her with a place to call home—because the City destroyed it.

Think about that—A mother gives birth, enters temporary shelter, and while she is away, the home she was supposed to return to is demolished.

Where is the humanity in that?

We refuse to believe that the answer to homelessness is simply to destroy the few resources and forms of shelter that unhoused people have managed to create for themselves.

Oakland can—and must—do better.

We cannot replace the tiny homes that were destroyed, but we can help do something better, help with emergency and permanent housing.
