Today, June 12th, at 3:00 pm there is a critical City Council meeting
for all of us who care about Oakland!
The Oakland City Council will be officially proposing potential amendments to the mid-cycle City Budget. If they balance the budget and come to an agreement, they will make their final vote on June 18th and the mid-cycle budget will be passed. The City has planned to balance the budget by selling their half ownership of the Coliseum site to African American Sports and Entertainment Group (AASEG). They deem the 60 million dollars that they will receive from AASEG during this budget cycle to be the only way for them to balance a mid-cycle budget that was estimated to be facing a deficit of up to 177 million dollars. The City is rushing to sell the Coliseum site to make up for the budget shortfall, which if left unchecked could jeopardize the jobs of city workers, the provision of vital city services, not to mention the funding of many community organizations and programs that truly serve and protect the people of Oakland.
The City Council will also hear the legislation that will govern the sale of the City’s stake in the Coliseum site at this City Council meeting on June 12th. The abrupt decision to hurriedly sell the Coliseum site was made without community input. It is imperative that the redevelopment of the Coliseum site includes a robust, legally binding Community Benefits Agreement with community oversight and enforcement. The benefits of that agreement must be determined by the people of Oakland, most especially the people of East Oakland who will be the most directly impacted by the redevelopment of the site. We must be there! Our voices must be heard!
This City Council meeting today is our opportunity to be heard about the 2024-2025 budget and the sale of the Coliseum site possibly for the last time that can actually impact the amendments to the budget and the terms of the sale. We must show up! We must be present! We must be heard!
The budget needs to be balanced.
City jobs and services need to be saved!
Vital community programs need to be funded!
And Public Land must be used for Public Good!!
How can public good and community benefits be determined if we, the people of Oakland are not present and heard in the process? Please show up on June 12th, either in person at City Hall or on Zoom. Your presence is needed in order for the Power of the People to be felt!!
Stand Up! Show Up! Raise Your Voice!
