Akonadi Foundation Akonadi Foundation funds powerful movements and coordinated campaigns to shape a racially just Oakland.

Akonadi Foundation is one of the first place-based family foundations to make racial justice a central focus of our giving. We follow the lead of organizers on the frontlines of the movement for a racially just Oakland. For more than two decades, we have invested audaciously in Black and people of color-led organizing to make Oakland a beacon of justice and liberation for the nation. Our values:
~We believe that Black people and people of color must have the power to influence and determine the decisions that affect their lives.

~We believe movements led by directly impacted communities are the key to achieving racial justice.

~We believe culture and healing are essential elements in systems change.

How do we bring people into the democratic process beyond voting and election cycles? For our latest blog, we are excited to feature Founder in Residence at PolicyLink and Professor of Practice at the Goldman School of Public Policy, Angela Glover Blackwell and Founder and Board Chair at Akonadi Foundation, Quinn Delaney, in a discussion about Oakland’s first-ever civic assembly.

The Civic Assembly is a community-led process giving residents real power to shape decisions about the city and its future. As part of the process, 40 delegates reflecting the diversity of the Town, were selected to review data, gather community input, explore examples of successful strategies, and develop recommendations on how to transform vacant storefronts, commercial spaces, and lots into vibrant community assets.

Together, Angela and Quinn discuss how the Oakland Civic Assembly helps build a racially just society, combats apathy in a tumultuous political climate, and serves as a blueprint for building similar models across the country. The So Love Can Win Fund advances a key goal of our overall strategy - fostering belonging and radical imagination for racial justice movement building in Oakland. This month, we brought together grantee partners and practitioners to not only build community but to deepen our understanding of the opportunities and challenges within the arts and culture landscape.

We're so grateful for everyone who joined us for a beautiful evening of celebration and connection, hosted at Lovely Day Oakland. It's our honor to support the incredible artists, organizers, storytellers and culture bearers who inspire us to take collective action as we imagine what is possible for our city.

Applications are open for our fourth round of the Belonging in Oakland: A Just City Cultural Fund!

Are you an Oakland-based artists, culture bearer, or healer? We're excited to invest $100,000/year for three years to three collaborations of cultural and social change organizations serving BIPOC communities. Awardees will also receive stipends for artists' living expenses and funding to document the work.
