Partnership isn't just something we talk about. It's something we build. And the Greater Southern Alameda Area in Northern California is showing what's possible.

Congratulations to the inaugural winners of the Awesome UBT Recognition Award (AURA)! These Unit-Based Teams are proving what happens when frontline workers lead, collaborate, and turn great ideas into real improvements for patients, coworkers, and their workplaces.

🏆 Communications UBT (SLN #65) was recognized as the Most Improved UBT after growing from a Level 1 UBT to a Level 3 UBT within a year, and ultimately achieved recognition as a Level 5 High Functioning UBT in 2026.

🏆 Laboratory UBT (SLN/UNC-MOB/SLH-MOB #1359) earned High Functioning UBT honors for building a culture where every team member has the knowledge and tools to succeed by committing to full training for all 144 team members.

This is our Partnership. This is the Coalition Difference.

83,000+ voices on record. That's a real win.

That is the power of our Coalition: WE identified staffing as a priority, WE helped build the process, and WE drove this work forward in every region, facility, and department.

Joint Staffing gives frontline workers and managers a way to identify what our departments need to prevent burnout, support our teams, and deliver the care our patients deserve. It's a process we didn't have before our 2023 National Agreement.

Now, Kaiser has a clear picture of what teams need and a shared responsibility, through the Partnership, to act on it.

Joint Staffing isn't busy work. Too many of our staffing needs went unanswered last year. But this process gives us the foundation to keep advocating, track progress, and bring frontline staffing needs into future conversations—including 2027 bargaining.

As a union partnership representative in Washington, Misha Smith helps bring partnership to life every day. But at the heart of her work is a belief that partnership works best when everyone can show up fully as themselves.

She puts that belief into action in visible ways - from a rainbow in her email signature, to spending her first Pride parade on the KP float. At every turn, Smith makes sure LGBTQ+ colleagues know they belong, that they aren’t alone, and that their voices matter.

Her message for Pride is clear:
“Be proud. Be loud. Just be you—your full, authentic self.”

Michelle Horn, RN has spent her nearly 30-year career investing in compassionate, equitable care. As an openly LGBTQ+ nurse and union leader, she believes that protecting LGBTQ+ rights is inseparable from Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to being the best place to work and receive care.

In addition to her role in perioperative services, Michelle serves as a UBT sponsor, chapter president for SEIU Local 121RN, and helped launch her union’s first Lavender Caucus - a community open to all that advocates for inclusion.

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating leaders like Michelle whose commitment to inclusion and compassion strengthen care and connection at KP. Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🌈
