The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, AFL-CIO, is a federation of 11 locals from 3 international unions representing more than 80,000 Kaiser Permanente healthcare workers in medical centers and offices across the nation. We live and work in the communities that we strive to keep healthy and safe. With Kaiser Permanente, the Coalition has formed the largest and most enduring Labor Management Partnership in the United States — all to ensure the best care and the best jobs in the healthcare industry.

This Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, we're proud to spotlight Veronica Málaga, an LVN, OPEIU Local 30 contract specialist and longtime partnership leader whose commitment to advocacy is rooted in family, culture and community. For Veronica, supporting patients and coworkers is a way to honor the sacrifices and opportunities created by the generations that came before her.

A 2nd-generation American, Veronica's grandparents immigrated from Mexico and worked as farmworkers in California's Imperial Valley. She credits her mother, who raised 4 children as a single parent, as her greatest inspiration and the person who taught her to lead with empathy and resilience.

Over her 20 years at Kaiser Permanente, those values have guided her work. Through her leadership in UBTs and support of union members, Veronica is passionate about helping people feel heard and empowered through partnership.

After putting her education on hold to care for her mother during her battle with cancer, Veronica returned to school determined to fulfill the promise she made to her mom to finish her degree. She brings that same determination to her work serving patients, co-workers and her community.

Three years ago, our historic strike culminated in a National Agreement at Kaiser Permanente that delivered major wins for workers —
✔️ 21.5% wage increases in all regions
✔️A minimum wage
✔️ Stronger job protections
✔️ A greater voice in staffing

But the National Agreement we rely on today didn’t happen overnight.

It was built on decades of workers standing together and building power for retirement security, affordable healthcare for our families, real education and career opportunities, and our voice through the Partnership structure.

Three years later, our history reminds us of something powerful: we are strongest when we stand together as 90,000+ frontline workers. Protecting what we’ve won — and building what comes next — depends on that same unity.
