And We’re Live. 🪲

Sally Steele from Outdoorrithm joins us for a conversation on redefining belongingness outside as we delve into first-time campers overcoming fear, generational trauma, and persisting barriers in access to the outdoors.

We centered four questions to help prepare us for this powerful discussion:
- Can we name some of the historical and generational barriers that have disrupted our natural relationship with the earth?
- How has the outdoor recreation movement been co-opted by targeted marketing campaigns and overconsumption trends?
- How do the logistics of camping, timed entry, and online reservations further a culture of assumption and underpin inaccessibility across generations and demographics?
- How do traditional gender roles and family structures show up in outdoor spaces? How do we support positive interactions while breaking down harmful binaries?

Tune in to hear what we learned. 👀

Listen to this month's episode wherever you get your podcasts. 🎙️✨

We are excited to welcome Sally Steele from Outdoorithm to Joy Outside. 🪲

Sally is what happens when acquired knowledge meets brilliance, compassion, and deep intention. Her vocation extends beyond education and into the sacred work of community-to-nature-to-person connection. Working at the intersection of nature and spirituality, Sally centers regenerative healing practices that honor both the Earth and the body.

In this episode, we unpack the often unseen forces that shape our relationship with the outdoors, who feels invited in, who feels excluded, and why. From the loss of intergenerational connections to land, to the rise of commercialization in outdoor recreation, to camping systems that increasingly privilege those with time, resources, and digital access, this conversation challenges dominant ideas of accessibility and belonging.

We can’t wait for you to hear it!

More than just inaccessibility… 🌀

What happens when our relationship with the outdoors is shaped more by systems, marketing, and exclusion than by connection?

This Friday’s episode dives into the hidden barriers that shape who feels welcome outside, from generational disconnection with the land, to the commercialization of outdoor recreation, to the growing inaccessibility of camping fueled by timed entries and online reservations.

We also unpack how gender roles and family structures show up in outdoor spaces, and what it means to create environments rooted in care, curiosity, and belonging instead of binaries.

This conversation challenged us in all the best ways and we can’t wait for you to hear it. 🌿

Stay tuned to find out who’s joining JO for this powerful conversation—and mark your calendars for Friday, May 29th. You won’t want to miss it. 🎙️✨

Equitable evaluation moves beyond simply collecting data. 📝

We listed three key questions that can help guide your next evaluation:

Whose voices are being heard?
Whose voices are missing?
Who benefits from this evaluation?

Community-centered evaluation is not about having the perfect tools. 🛠❌

It’s about building stronger habits of reflection, transparency, and accountability around how we gather and use information. 💪🌍🌱

Looking to strengthen your evaluation practices? We support organizations through workshops, consulting, and redesign support to help create evaluation approaches that are more equitable, community-centered, and actionable.

One simple question sparked honest reflections from camp leaders around the country.

At the annual Tri-State American Camp Association conference, Our Director of Learning and Impact, Elizabeth Allen, invited camp leaders to reflect on a powerful question.

“What’s the hardest conversation happening at your camp right now?”

What came back wasn’t surprising—but seeing it all in one place made it real in a different way. Read about the
themes and takeaways in Elizabeth's blog at the link in our bio.

Let us know what’s been surfacing for you? We'd love to hear about it! And if you’re looking for a partner to help navigate it, feel free to reach out at [email protected]
