The Bay Area Tumor Institute is one of 32 National Cancer Institute-approved, community-based clinical research programs authorized to participate in cancer research providing investigational treatments to cancer patients in the community setting. Volunteers Needed

National Cancer Institute: Samples from People With and Without Cancer Could Help Verify Future Blood Tests to Detect Cancer Early

The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, announced the opening of a new study for participant enrollment that aims to obtain a reference set of blood samples from newly diagnosed patients with cancer and healthy individuals without cancer to include in a future study to assess the utility of early cancer detection blood tests.

The Alliance Multicancer Early Detection (MCED) Biobank Study plans to enroll about 2,000 people. Participants will have a blood sample collected and will complete a health questionnaire. Participants with cancer will have an option to provide a tissue sample. All participants will be asked to provide another blood sample after one year.

The Bay Area Tumor Institute Community Clinical Oncology Program (BATI-CCOP) is a consortium of 7 community and county hospitals in Greater Oakland, California. Since its creation in 1979 as a CGOP and its convention to CCOP status in 1989, this consortium has continuously provided the community's cancer specialists, primary care physicians, and hospitals with an NCI-approved and funded clinical trials program.

Piedmont resident and longtime philanthropist Sheryl Wong was honored recently for her work with the Bay Area Tumor Institute at a fundraising dinner in San Francisco. The May 6 black tie dinner/ dance event at the city's Ritz-Carlton hotel, where Wong was honored with a Living Example award, raised more than $160,000.
