You are invited to take part in Celebrate the Maine Woods!, an exploration of what our forests and woodlands do each day to sustain and inspire us. This year-long collaborative effort begins in September 2013, involving hundreds of organizations across Maine that are offering forest-related events and activities open to all.

Want to do this?

Maine Woodland Owners Wildlife Biologist Autumn Randall encourages everyone to help Cornell Lab with the Great Backyard Bird Count on February 13-16. It’s easy to do, and the input really helps!

All you need to do is spend 15 minutes a day in your favorite places watching birds—identify them, count them, and submit your counts, which will help scientists better understand and protect birds around the world. If you already use apps like eBird or Merlin, your submissions over the four days count toward the Bird Count.

Loving the Maine North Woods: 25 years of Historic Land Conservation with Karin Tilberg

How is it possible to successfully represent the diverse interests and pressures placed on one of Maine’s most important geographic locations – the North Woods?

Please join us to find out with Karin R. Tilberg, retired president and CEO of the Forest Society of Maine. The roundtable and lunch will be held on Wednesday, March 25 at Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden, ME at 10:30 a.m. The presentation will begin at 11 a.m. There will also be time for networking and renewal between entities. If you are unable to attend in person, we will be live streaming her presentation. Register for this free program by clicking here.

Karin’s career spanned key leadership positions that helped shape the diverse, often challenging, interests of the economies now developing in the North Woods, as well as in negotiating the natural resource and environmental policies of this most remote area in northern Maine.

Her life’s work also culminated in the 2024 publication of “Loving the North Woods: 25 Years of Historic Conservation in Maine.” The book’s focus is on the seismic period of change and the behind-the-scenes processes shaping the North Woods between 1990-2015. Copies of the book, encapsulating an august body of professional and personal experience, will be available at the roundtable. Proceeds go entirely to groups that bring conservation to the North Woods and to the Wabanaki Land Return Fund.

Ms. Tilberg holds a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Vermont and a J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law. Her career ranged from Director of the Northern Forest Alliance to Deputy Commissioner of the Maine Department of Conservation, Senior Policy Advisor to Governor John E. Baldacci, to participating in many state and local stakeholder groups. Her book reflects this.

We will need a head count for those who will be participating in-person and for providing lunch for all who are attending. Please RSVP to this email by March 23.

Join us starting TOMORROW for the Thoreau Wabanaki Trail Festival in Greenville, Maine, July 23–28, 2025, where culture, nature, and history come together in the heart of the Maine Woods. Explore the place Thoreau called “stern and savage” and where the Penobscot people have lived for generations.

Experience guided nature walks, Penobscot canoe traditions, drumming, moose talks, Thoreau storytelling, and more.
This is more than a festival. It is a journey through land, story, and time.
