Storytelling and the Creative Journey to Wellness

May 26th @ 6:00pm

ARTogether and Asian Health Services invite you to join a panel discussion on May 26th at 6pm PST with AAPI creatives and clinicians about art and storytelling as tools for mental health and wellness.

Each of us carries a multitude of stories that define who we are and where we belong—in the world and within our communities. Our stories, in turn, shape the spaces that we move through. With so much happening in the world around us, we may be bombarded with conflicting stories, thoughts and feelings that make it hard for us to connect to the most important stories - our own.

Edward Gunawan "Press Play", Michelle Lin "A House Made of Water" (Sibling Rivalry Press) and Esme Weijun Wang “The Collected Schizophrenias” (Graywolf Press) will share their work in media and literature and discuss the role art and story played in their wellness journeys: and how art can be a tool for mental health and wellness. Jennifer Chen, PsyD (Clinical Supervisor) and Shirley Chen, APCC (Mental Health Counselor) from Asian Health Services will join the conversation and share community resources and wellness practices.

Hello friends!

AHSYP is doing a needs assessment survey to gauge how we can better serve those ages 12-25 in clinic, programs, and providing other services/resources. If you fall within the age range (or work with youth and young adults ages 12-25), it would be great if you can do it/pass it along!
We're trying to get as many as 1000 needs assessments done by the end of June!
Here is the link:

ONLINE LEARNING & MENTAL HEALTH

Sahara Ang, 12th grade

“Finishing the last of my junior year was definitely interesting. My motivation constantly went in and out, it was a mess. I did what I had to do to get through the rest of the school year, but being home with distractions was difficult. I enjoyed spending time with my dog and in the comfort of my room. But I didn’t like knowing that school could just “disappear” if I just closed my computer. So the overall experience of shifting to online school was hard for me.
My mental health really took a hit from when the shelter in place was put into action. When we first initially switched to online school, I thought I would be able to get by. But as the notifications and emails about assignments came in I felt really stressed and anxious. I know we had deadlines to meet and trying to get things done wasn’t my top priority at the time. I was really concerned for my family’s and friends’ health. But also trying to coexist all day with my family all at home was definitely hard to juggle. So trying to keep calm didn’t seem like an option. I went from having a full Bethany Mota school morning routine to having no routine at all. I woke up when I had my first zoom call and ate lunch as I was on the call. I felt like life was just at pause, subjects that I loved learning about didn’t appeal to me the same way it did. School felt so forced and I just wanted to get it over and done with.
Incorporating activities that made me happy really helped me get over the lack of motivation. I took lots of breaks in between when I was doing assignments which helped me a lot. When I started to feel really disconnected I listened to Harry Styles to make me feel something. Or I would journal before I started classes. Getting all the stress and thoughts out felt like a refresh and it was. It helped me stay grounded and continue with online school.”

ENVIRONMENTAL HEATH & JUSTICE

Alyssa Hannah, 17

“Hello! My name is Alyssa Hannah and I'm a senior at Arroyo High School. I’m 17 years and born and raised in San Lorenzo CA. I’m very passionate for equal rights and also climate justice! Where to begin!? Definitely the ocean and the trash in it. Just seeing what scientists say what’s going to happen in the future is so sad. Especially when it comes to the animals and their habitat. Another thing I’m also passionate about is the climate rising which is one of the big reasons we have fires. It’s crazy seeing what a rising temperature does to our only home. One the biggest things I do to advocate is actually some small things such as recycling in and out of my own home. Cleaning up trash where I can see it. Also encouraging others to go on a vegetarian/vegan diet! Like I said with the other question, just the small things! Small things can go big ways and if everyone put it in their daily routine and lifestyle then I think we could see a difference! CUT DOWN FOSSIL FUELS! They should use renewable energy instead! They are a BIG reason why we are currently going through a climate crisis. They also should use greener infrastructures and equipment! I’m gonna repeat myself again but literally the small things i try to do especially during quarantine like cutting stuff off and recycling. Turn off the lights I’m not using. I also try to have my parents and my sister to do things like that around the house. Our ocean will be much cleaner than ever and bluer than ever. We would not have to be able to suffer heat waves and go through these devastating fires. The Green New Deal would come into play in our national government. Animals would not go extinct. Just so many other things! My lifestyle probably will stay the same how it is because I don’t like to be wasteful and I love helping out!”
