💥HIP mobilized public health on May Day to fight back against rising authoritarianism and corporate greed. This month, we’re carrying that fight forward and supporting Seven Days in June, a national campaign demanding care, dignity, and investment in public health infrastructure from June 1-7.

Last year, lawmakers passed over $1 trillion in health funding cuts as part of H.R. 1. The most severe human and economic consequences of these cuts will not take effect until later this year, which is why we need to make our voices heard NOW!

Seven Days in June is focused on setting the expectation that health is a core governing responsibility, regardless of ideology or party. Here at HIP, we're also supporting it because we see it as a moment to say that public health cannot function on the terrain of authoritarianism: democracy and government accountability is necessary for our health.

Organizers are calling on local groups to plan or join town halls, panel discussions, forums, demonstrations, marches, rallies, vigils, interfaith services, and other tactics. Find events here: https://www.sevendaysinjune.org/

💫 We’re thrilled to introduce HIP’s 2026 Power-Building Partnerships for Health (PPH) cohort!

PPH cultivates partnerships between health departments and community power-building organizations and builds their capacity to use inside-outside strategy for collective action toward health equity and racial justice. This year’s PPH cohort hails from Washington State, Vermont, and Jackson, Mississippi, and includes for the first time unique coalition formations, state health departments, and a public trauma hospital. This incredible cohort reflects the power of partnerships in action.

🏘️ 📣 In today’s Globe Rhode Island commentary section, HIP’s Julian Drix, MPH and Providence City Councilor Justin Roias For Ward 4 make the case that rent stabilization is a critical public health intervention.

"For years, Providence residents have been demanding transformative solutions to our city’s housing affordability crisis...Public health research shows that regulating rent is both a key strategy for housing affordability and an investment in the public’s health. Inaction now will come at a great cost to residents who may have to forgo basic necessities because they simply cannot afford increases to their rent."

The public health research is clear: housing insecurity, displacement, and unaffordable rents harm physical and mental health. Stable, affordable housing helps communities thrive.

At today's veto override vote, Providence City Council members have an opportunity to stand with tenants, health leaders, and residents across the city by overturning Mayor Brett Smiley's veto of the rent stabilization ordinance. By stabilizing rent, councilors will help keep a roof over more Providence residents’ heads, while supporting community health and saving lives.

R.I. city councilors should overturn Mayor Smiley’s veto of the rent stabilization ordinance, which will help support community health, write city councilor and public health leader.

May 1, 2026 marked a milestone for our public health community. In over 15 cities across the US, public health workers came together to show our power and proclaim: “Our Health Over Billionaires’ Wealth” and “Collective Care, Not Warfare.”

We launched our anti-authoritarianism campaign in March knowing every sector, every institution, every part of our society must get organized, become a site of resistance, and refuse to comply with authoritarianism. Public health has a key role to play—and our field is still building its organizing muscles. With over 5,000 coordinated May Day actions nationwide, this was a powerful moment to build and flex that strength. And we did!

And yet, the authoritarian threat continues escalating, coming for our right to be represented in our government, and our bodily autonomy: just last week, SCOTUS eviscerated the Voting Rights Act, and though the decision is currently on pause, a federal court moved to limit access to abortion medication. No one should be surprised that public health is showing up — but it’s on us to move from observation to action, to visibly fight back, and to advance a bold, inclusive vision of what public health stands for.

As one partner shared, “This invitation from HIP got my organization thinking about what we can do about the authoritarian threat, and moved us into the first stages of action.”

May Day was a glimpse of what is possible when we move collectively. We’re excited to build on this momentum. Stay tuned for upcoming campaign learning and action opportunities, and reach out any time if you want to connect. And if you’re excited to jump in, join the Rising Majority’s upcoming Care Not Warfare webinar on May 7: https://actionnetwork.org/events/care-not-warfare?clear_id=true

Public health has a key role to play in mass resistance and non-compliance. We can and must act now to stop the slide into authoritarianism, and win the multi-racial democracy, liberation, and health-supporting resources we all deserve.

Join a local public health contingent for May Day action in your area!

Public health has a critical role in defeating authoritarianism — and we need you to join us.

May Day is the next major national mass mobilization day being called for by organizers across many sectors around the country, with a shared platform of Workers Over Billionaires & No War, No ICE, No Kings and a call to participate as much as you can in No School, No Work, No Shopping. Along with other public health leaders, we’re organizing our field to show up en masse to make clear that authoritarianism is a public health crisis.

Every person counts. Political research analyzing hundreds of movements across the world has found it takes just 3.5% of a population engaged in sustained, peaceful protest to successfully challenge a government and bring about transformative change.

So we’re calling on YOU to join public health and health sector folks in your local community to take collective action for health and democracy on Friday, May 1st!

Members of our network are mobilizing public health contingents in: Albuquerque, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boise, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Iowa City, Ithaca, Kansas City MO, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Madison, Memphis, Middletown MD, Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York City, Providence, Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Cruz CA, Seattle, and Washington DC.

After signing up, someone from HIP will be in touch via email about your meetup info.

Don’t see your city or town listed? We’ll help you host a contingent in your area — please indicate interest in the form by Friday, April 24.

Together, we can push back against authoritarianism and build a world of health equity and multiracial democracy!

🚨 New research alert: The Housing Justice as Health Equity Collaborative, which HIP is a part of, recently conducted a California Renter Health Survey, a new tool designed to understand how housing affordability, stability, and conditions affect renters’ health across the state.

The survey findings show that housing instability and eviction are worsening renters’ mental and physical health and creating challenges to accessing healthcare. They also show that ICE kidnappings are creating a barrier for immigrant households to earn income and pay rent, and have been the cause of evictions for some respondents.

KEY FINDINGS:

🏘️ Nearly 20% of people responding to the survey moved from their homes when they did not choose to within the past five years. And 20% were either threatened with eviction or fearful that they would be evicted by their landlord. Almost 40% of respondents experienced some sort of housing instability.

🏘️ Nearly 20% of people indicated that rising rent costs puts them at risk for eviction. One in 10 respondents confirmed that unaffordable rent was the reason they were forced to leave their homes within the past five years.

🏘️ Nearly 1 in 5 immigrant households reported ICE raids as a barrier to paying rent and 6% reported an eviction experience due to ICE action.

🏘️ Immigrant households and households with children and seniors experienced a greater proportion of forced moves, as well as greater housing instability in general.

🏘️ Housing instability is connected to worsening health for renters and their family members. In our sample, nearly 3 in 4 people experiencing housing instability reported mental health challenges compared to just 14% without housing instability. Almost half of people (48%) with housing instability experienced physical health challenges compared to 12% without housing instability. About 25% of people with housing instability had trouble accessing healthcare and maintaining long-term care compared to just 5% of those without housing instability.

It’s time for policymakers to take action to keep families housed and healthy! We are calling on CA leaders to pass strong eviction protections including SB 436 and SB 1243!
