Oakland Elizabeth House

Oakland Elizabeth House Elizabeth House is a transitional residence for single women and women with children who have experienced homelessness, violence, addiction or poverty.

https://www.yumraising.com/secure/oaklandeh_oakland_elizabeth_house82/MarLan7468/ We are located in a former convent at St. Augustine Church, in the Rockridge neighborhood of North Oakland, California. A unique aspect of Elizabeth House is that staff and residents live and work together in a co-op model. Decisions about life in the House are made by all of the women at our weekly community House M

eeting. This keeps women in control of their home life, providing an opportunity to practice effective communication and decision-making skills. Women develop a sense of their own power by using it constructively. Unlike most homeless programs, Elizabeth House belongs to the women who live here. Each woman has her own key to the front door and to her bedroom. This is their home.

A good night's sleep changes more than you'd think. πŸ“š

Kids can't focus on spelling tests when they don't know where they'll sleep tonight, or whether tomorrow looks anything like today.

Housing isn't just shelter. It's the quiet foundation that lets a child actually be a kid, and a student, instead of carrying an adult's worries.

Help build that foundation for a family, link in our bio.

Some things in Oakland just don't change. 🌳

Since 1991, Elizabeth House has shown up for women and children who needed a place to land. Neighborhoods shift, needs evolve, block by block, decade by decade.

But our commitment to stable housing and real support hasn't moved an inch in over 30 years, and it isn't about to start now.

Help us carry that history forward with a gift at oakehouse.org.

24 months can sound like plenty of time, until you break down what has to happen inside it: steady work, rebuilt credit, childcare, and a waitlist for permanent housing that takes its own time.

This window isn't a countdown. It's runway for families rebuilding from the ground up.

If you'd like to help extend that runway, every gift brings a family closer to stable ground. πŸ’›

Right now, someone somewhere is choosing kindness in a place most of us will never see. 🌍

That same spirit shows up here in smaller ways too: a case manager going the extra mile, a volunteer who remembers a name.

Same compassion, closer to home. Grateful for every version of it today. πŸ’›

Some of the most important work in the world happens without an audience.

It's the case manager who stays late because a family needed one more phone call made. The volunteer who folds laundry, stocks shelves, and shows up rain or shine, never asking for credit. The donor whose name we might not even know, but whose generosity keeps the lights on.

Nonprofits don't run on good intentions alone. They run on people who choose, again and again, to care in ways that often go unseen.

So on National Nonprofit Day, we're not just saying thank you. We're saying we notice you. Every quiet act of showing up matters more than you know. πŸ’›

Happy National Nonprofit Day to everyone who makes this work possible.

Ten families at a time.

That's how Oakland Elizabeth House approaches housing. Not at scale for scale's sake, but with enough room to actually walk alongside each family. Residents get up to two years of housing plus case management, job support, financial coaching, and childcare access.

Small in size. Serious in impact.

Oakland Elizabeth House wasn't created by a government program or a national organization.

It was built by people in this community who looked at a real need and decided not to wait for someone else to meet it. That grassroots spirit is still what drives everything we do today.

And it's what makes your support so meaningful. When you give to Ehouse, you're not just donating to a nonprofit. You're continuing something this city built for itself. 🧑

For most kids, summer means freedom. For children in unstable housing, it means losing the one consistent safe space in their day.

No school. No routine. No guarantee of what tomorrow looks like.

At Ehouse, school is out but the stability stays. Every child here still has a safe place to wake up, a routine to count on, and adults who show up for them every single day.

Help us give more kids a summer worth remembering. 🌞

Since January, families at Ehouse have eaten together every day. Kids have gone to school. Women have worked steadily toward independence.

That's what six months of consistent community support actually builds. Not headlines. Just real, quiet, steady progress for real Oakland families.

We're halfway through 2026. The second half needs the same energy the first half had. Keep going with us. πŸ’›

There is something about how Oakland takes care of its own that doesn't exist everywhere.

It's direct. It's real. It doesn't wait for someone else to step up first. Oakland Elizabeth House is that same spirit in action: a community-built response to a community need that's been running since 1991.

Your support, whatever the size, keeps this city strong from the inside out. That's not a small thing. 🧑
