AfroComicCon The annual event is a celebration of Black Comic Book Arts and Culture the first of its kind which highlights regional and local artists in the areas of visual arts, dance, literature, stand-up comedy show, graphic novels, comic books, panel discussions, as well as an introduction to many paid internship opportunities, in the comic book and entertainment industry. AFCC is the first of

its kind to be a Comic Book, Animation, arts festival, and birth here in Oakland CA. The festival host the widest spectrum of the Black Comic Book art of its kind attracting residents and visitors to come to Oakland and experience an array of free and modestly priced attendee tickets, workshops, exhibitions, and activities in a variety of venues. In addition to this AFCC will host its annual International Film Festival, where the film competition will be held online. AFCC programming has implemented the same opportunities for learning, how to craft stories through digital instruction, and literacy skills provided to participants learning how to tell their stories. This year’s theme within Afro-futurism focuses on the use of Animation, Cartooning, and other visual art forms to express their vision of an Afro-futuristic world, where we are incorporating an imaginary idea of storytelling aspect as a part of our goals to help preserve stories

Hey AfroComicCon Family! We are having another great event in partnership with the Chabot Space & Science Center! Come out to first Friday in February that’s February 6 from 6 PM to 10 PM. There’s going to be amazing events from the center, and also brought to you a by Afro Comic Con some of our featured activities are a panel discussion about the history of Afrofuturism classes in Oakland, we are featuring independent game developers with a card game about African gods we have a talented live music performer, as well as the Afro Comic Con booth and Photo opportunities. Helping plan AfroComicCon + Bay Area events, Co-leading Little Joy at Black Joy Parade 2026, Working with fashion + cosplay talent, Serving as a liaison with community partners, Supporting day-to-day admin + project tasks

We invite students and young adults between the ages of 15 - 24 to participate in our free collaborative event: Hack the Town 2025! Its a 2-day hackathon in Oakland! This opportunity will be held in partnership with Google Play and co-hosted by us: AfroComicCon/OTEC (Oakland Technology & Education Center) as part of our project - Leveling Up: Storytelling through Games, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Augmented Reality (AR) for College and Career Readiness! Breakfast and lunch provided! Limited spots left the link is in our bio!

The students can choose to make their project about anything, we are making suggestions but the sky is the limit! Each group will create an app!

In the 2025 hackathons, students will be given prompts and the tools to create digital stories centered around their environment in the neighborhood, fixing an issue in the city, preserving family/community history, etc., to create the foundation for the 4-6 week workshops in 2026. The 2026 programming will focus on creating a video game based on these stories.

After the success of Hack the Hood’s inaugural event in 2024, we’re excited to help them expand and would love to invite interested participants, students and young creatives to join us!

Participants will be grouped into teams of three by Hack the Hood staff to ensure balanced skill levels. This is a chance for them to collaborate, learn, and create alongside other local talent in a dynamic, supportive environment. Here are the details below!

Drawing inspiration from Gil Scott-Heron’s iconic poem:
“The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” this anthology calls on comic book artists to submit art that illustrates what revolution means to them.

Scott-Heron’s poem challenged complacency and media-driven narratives, reminding us that real change happens in the streets, in communities, and within ourselves—not on a screen for passive consumption. In the same spirit, this anthology transforms that message into a visual manifesto, reflecting the struggles, victories, and ongoing revolutions in life and culture.

We invite artists to explore revolution (evolution/transformation) in all its forms—personal, political, spiritual, technological, and cultural. How does revolution look when it’s happening within us? How can we challenge systems, rewrite narratives, and reclaim space through art? What does revolution look like for your community?

This is your opportunity to share how revolution shapes our communities and futures from your perspective as an artist and contribute to a diverse collective manifesto that captures the power of storytelling and the radical act of creation. We’re documenting the ongoing fight for liberation, identity, and truth (Feel free to also be guided by the YOUTH ARTIST PROMPT as well). Please DM us for questions!
