We the Artists of the Bay Area

We the Artists of the Bay Area A coalition between artists & established organizations, community leaders, activists, policy makers & specialists to protect & serve creative spaces.

n response to the Dec. 2 Ghost Ship tragedy, a new organization has been formed to build a coalition between a vast network of artists and established organizations, community leaders, activists, policy makers and specialists. We the Artists of the Bay Area (WABA) seeks to facilitate conversations between the creative community and the broader community, advocate on behalf of creative spaces, prov

ide access to resources, and educate the creative community about maintaining safe live/work, studio and event spaces. The creative community is made up of makers, entrepreneurs, artists, innovators, hackers, inventors, technologists and performers. The Bay Area’s history reflects their contributions in driving innovation and creativity that underpins economic and cultural vitality. Over the course of just two days, WABA garnered more than 11,000 signatures in support of these efforts, and the list of signatories continues to grow. WABA representatives are actively reaching out to existing local advocacy groups, seeking to work with those who share the goal of sustaining creative spaces through sensible, practical, and legal solutions.

Save the Art Update! We could still use just a little bit more of your HELP! Amazingly we've ALMOST reached our fundraising goal, and thanks to all the private and GofundMe donations and volunteer effort we got ALL THE ART OFF the casino site last month. WOOHOO! https://www.gofundme.com/f/theart

But we still need about $30K in order to help out all the artists for having to pay to get their own art back after Transfix went bankrupt. It's Giving Tuesday so help us out! Every little bit counts, can you give $20?

Please LIKE and SHARE and maybe you know someone who wants to swoop in and help us cross the finish line? and THANK YOU ALL from the bottom of my heart. Together we are turning a major bummer into a wonderful story of community support and love for ART and ARTISTS!

Here’s the deal. In spring 2023, Transfix opened to the public in Las Vegas, starting what was to be a thre… Tyler Hanson needs your support for Save The Art

As part of the heART is Oakland exhibition, we are hosting an exclusive evening with LATE NITE ART. This creative experience is intended for surviving friends and family members of the Ghost Ship fire. This event is free and is limited to 50 participants.

LATE NITE ART is an evening of collaborative art-making, curated music and facilitated dialogue to foster creative energy and thoughtful engagement. Come meet new friends, and get your hands dirty exploring some evocative emotions using art supplies. It's a hard thing to describe...just trust us, it can be powerful. See the video http://lateniteart.com/about/.

LATE NITE ART is NOT an event for artists - you don't need to be able to color within the lines or draw portraits of fruit bowls - you just need eyes, ears, and an open mind. Based in Oakland, since 2012 LATE NITE ART has given over 5,000 particpants an evening to remember.

heART is Oakland is a collaboration of FLAX art & design and We the Artists of the Bay Area (WABA). Both FLAX and WABA support Oakland's creative community, with FLAX providing inspiration and materials for creativity, and WABA working for advocacy and public awareness for creativity.

SAFER DIY SPACES is an Oakland-based, fiscally sponsored coalition of activists, architects, contractors, and artists that emerged in the wake of the tragic Ghost Ship fire in Oakland, CA in December 2016. We offer guidance, financial assistance, and labor to the frequently vulnerable members of the Bay Area's communities who live and/or work in non-traditional "DIY" spaces. DIY communities not only face the threat of displacement but also the risk of physical harm because the spaces in which they work or reside frequently require repairs and/or may not be up to code.

While assuring complete anonymity to those in these spaces, SAFER DIY SPACES provides support in the form of pre-inspection walk-throughs and guidance, reparative construction, and micro-grants to help fund the materials and labor necessary to implement core life-safety improvements.

Safer DIY Spaces is a 501(c)3 nonprofit staffed by building professionals and artists. We assist low-income DIY spaces with life-safety alterations and tenant-led building acquisitions. We also craft policy and building/zoning codes.

CALL FOR ART EXTENDED TO JUNE 26!

On Dec 2, 2016, Oakland experienced the tragic loss of 36 unique and creative souls. A city rich with visual artists and performance talents from various backgrounds make up a community unlike any in the world. For many, the act of creating and sharing art is an outlet of expression, freedom, and communication. We the Artists of the Bay Area and Flax art & design have teamed up to offer a community art show. This is a call for heART.

What

A benefit exhibition with the theme heART is Oakland, which will serve as a tribute to the victims of the Ghost Ship fire, and an opportunity to celebrate the art and artists that beat within the city’s heart.

When & Where

Show runs July 1-31, 2017
Soft Opening – Saturday, July 1, 6 PM – 9 PM

We all know that the Bay Area is facing an urgent crisis in housing. From 2007 to 2014 the nine Bay Area counties issued permits for only 57% of the housing needed to keep up with population growth. Since January 2011 the region has created five times more jobs than housing units.

Everyone seems to agree there is a problem, and there is general consensus about the solution set -- so why is it so hard to get anything done? Who are the players and what do they want? Are there any breakthrough legislative efforts underway, and how might we support their passage?

This event will explore these questions, and include a forward-looking, solutions-oriented conversation about how we can break the deadlock. Kim-Mai Cutler will give an overview of housing's political landscape. She'll be speaking with:
- Gloria Bruce, East Bay Housing Organizations Executive Director
- AnMarie Rodgers, SFPlanning Senior Policy Advisor
- Victoria Fierce, East Bay Forward Organizer
- Rev. Damita Davis-Howard, Oakland Community Organization
- Eric Tao, Developer and CEO of AGI Avant
