The Home Safe Program supports older adults at risk of or experiencing homelessness who are identified through their involvement with Adult Protective Services (APS). It provides critical interventions, including intensive housing case management, eviction prevention, and housing stabilization, for people who have fallen through the cracks of other systems.

Home Safe has been a game-changer in Alameda County and in 57 other California counties. Last year, SSC led a statewide effort to continue funding Home Safe, which was slated to run out of funding by the end of the 2025/26 fiscal year. We were successful, winning $83.5 million to fund the programs through June 2028.

Now, Assemblymember Corey Jackson, the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee #2 on Human Services, is proposing to expand Home Safe to all elders at risk of homelessness. His proposal will be on the agenda at the committee's March 25 hearing held in Room 444, State Capitol 1315 10th Street, Sacramento, CA.

At the Oakland Mayor's Commission on Aging's February 4th meeting, Senior Services Coalition (SSC) Executive Director Wendy Peterson presented The Policy Landscape and Impacts on Older Adults in Alameda County, offering a sobering overview of the cascading effects of federal and state policy changes on local seniors. Peterson outlined how federal legislation — including the Budget Reconciliation Act of 2025 (HR1) — is cutting Medicaid access, expanding work requirements for food assistance, and threatening food security programs like CalFresh, with significant ripple effects already being felt by tens of thousands of older adults in Alameda County.

She also highlighted the critical role of Measure W in backstopping aging services at the county level, and SSC's advocacy work to secure ongoing funding for those services in the upcoming Measure W Essential Services 5-year Plan and the County's 2026/27 budget. Peterson closed by inviting the Commission to partner with SSC to align advocacy efforts, train community members, and amplify the voices of seniors and the community-based organizations that serve them.

Shout out to Sharon from St. Mary's Center and Marcos from Bay Area Community Services (BACS) for elevating the needs of homeless and housing insecure older adults.

We talk about the early stages of losing housing and the interventions that can help keep homelessness “brief and rare.”

Thank you to Alameda County’s Board of Supervisors: $1.7M of this funding is focused on older adults by increasing capacity in the senior programs that provide meals and food to older adults with the Area Agency on Aging.

As CalFresh runs out of money due to federal cuts, the Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to spend more on food banks and meals.

TODAY: Show your support for our sector by tuning in – or attending – the next Joint Hearing of the Senate and Assembly Select Committees on the Nonprofit Sector.

This is an important opportunity for state representatives to gain deeper insights into the current challenges facing nonprofits in California. The hearing is scheduled for 3:30pm-5pm August 19th (in Senate Room 1200, 1021 O Street, Sacramento).

Two panels of nonprofit leaders will discuss critical issues, including the impact of federal funding cuts and new tax policies, supporting nonprofits involved in wildfire recovery, the creation of a state office dedicated to supporting nonprofits, and contracting reform.

Stream it live from the Assembly web page (the "watch" button will be live shortly before the meeting begins):
