Public Rights Project

Public Rights Project We give state and local government the talent, resources, and support they need to protect our legal rights. We are their reinforcements.

Our federal government will no longer enforce core civil rights, consumer rights, and environmental protection laws. That means a military family targeted by predatory lenders, an immigrant seeking refuge in America, a person of color subject to voter suppression, a woman seeking access to health care, a student harassed by debt collectors, a child drinking toxic water, and a teenager abused by po

lice officers cannot count on the federal government to protect their legal rights. When our federal government becomes hostile to the rule of law, states and cities bear the enormous responsibility of defending their residents' rights. Public Rights Project gives state and local public entities the talent, resources, and support they need to protect our rights.

What happens when the federal government tries to deploy the National Guard into our communities — without legal authority?

Local governments are fighting back.

In our latest blog, Public Rights Project CEO Jill Habig breaks down the real-world consequences of unlawful military deployment — and how cities and counties are pushing back to protect civil liberties and keep communities safe.

Once again, local governments are standing up for what really keeps us all safe: ensuring communities continue to get critical services and that the National Guard is only deployed in the rare cases when truly needed.

🎉 Honoring Juneteenth: Joy as resistance, justice as a calling

On June 19, 1865 — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation — over 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were finally told they were free. That moment became Juneteenth, a day of delayed liberation that reminds us how justice in America has never come easily, or on time.

At Public Rights Project, we honor Juneteenth not just by looking back, but by acting now. We see the echoes of that history in today’s fights — against federal intimidation, unlawful immigration raids, and attacks on civil rights. And we remain committed to standing with local governments and communities resisting these abuses of power.

We’re reminded that progress doesn’t require a majority — but it does require a committed few. As political scientist Erica Chenoweth’s research shows, it takes just 3.5% of a population to spark meaningful change.

So today, we rest. We reflect. And we recommit. Whether through lawsuits, mutual aid, or protest — freedom is a shared effort. And as Black poet Toi Dericotte reminds us, “joy is an act of resistance.”

Wishing you peace, power, and purpose this Juneteenth.

🖤Celebrating Black History, Today and Every Day🖤

As Black History Month comes to a close, we honor the incredible contributions of Black communities. But we also recognize the right to learn, teach, and celebrate Black history is under attack.

Recent efforts to ban or limit discussions about Black history in schools and public spaces threaten the very core of our nation's story. We can't let these attacks erase our past.

Let’s defend and elevate Black history, not just in February, but every day. We must continue to uplift the voices and experiences that built this country — just as Thurgood Marshall fought to dismantle segregation through landmark cases like Brown v. Board of Education, and Constance Baker Motley worked to desegregate schools and advance civil rights through her legal battles. Their legacies remind us to protect the rights and stories that have shaped our democracy.
