Domesticated and farm animals play an important role in supporting our clients’ emotional well-being by providing companionship and comfort, helping them cope with daily challenges. In addition, engaging in gardening and plant care offers clients a meaningful activity where they can nurture something of their own. This not only promotes a sense of accomplishment but also encourages physical activity and overall well being.

Clausen House purchased the Perkins property in 1975 to be another client residence. This 1912 home was designed by noted architect Arthur Brown to be his own family residence. Like the Earl Warren Vernon house (which Mr. Brown designed), this is also a historic and architecturally significant building; Arthur Brown’s “AB” are prominently shown in the ironwork of the front balcony.

Our clients at this home have an active voice in many of the decisions made. Residents create their own grocery lists, participate in coordination of health care services, design the recreation program most desirable to their interests, and decide during their weekly meetings what chores they’d like to have for that week. At Perkins, staff believe that, “everybody has the right to make their own choices to reach their individual goals.

Residential: Vernon House

In 1971, Clausen House purchased the former Earl Warren residence at 88 Vernon Street, the largest of our current homes. This 1915 Beaux-Arts style building, designed by noted architect Arthur Brown, is three stories with notable architectural features, and is Registered Oakland Landmark #30. The late United States Chief Justice Earl Warren lived in the house from 1934 to 1943. At the time of purchase, the house was large enough for 20 residents.

Residents at this home enjoy individual time as well as planned group activities. The large renovated backyard provides the residents with plenty of outdoor space for leisure activities.
