The algae in Lake Merritt serves a critical purpose. It acts as a nursery habitat for many of the fish that live in the lake, and it’s one of the many reasons we continue working to improve the water quality of Lake Merritt.

A huge thank you to the 235 volunteers who joined us in September to clean with us at Lake Merritt Institute. Together, we removed 10,110 gallons of trash from the lake, making a lasting impact on our community and local wildlife.

As of October 1, 2025, we’ve reached a total of 82,950 gallons removed, already surpassing last year’s total.

We’ve launched a new volunteer registration system — individuals, groups, and classrooms can now sign up easily to take part in keeping our lake beautiful.
