The Bay Area has strong legal protections against industrial pollution–but laws only work if they’re enforced. San Francisco Baykeeper keeps an eye on the many industrial polluters along the Bay, to keep corporations accountable and protect our health.

A recent survey found that Oakland has the most frustrating commute in California: the approach to the Bay Bridge, AKA the MacArthur Maze. Lots of people have no choice but to commute by car–but having that big traffic jam every morning isn’t just unpleasant for commuters. It also has big health consequences for the people living next to freeways.

Cars and trucks release dangerous pollutants, from the miniscule particles that come off brakes and tires (called “road dust”) to tailpipe pollutants including black carbon and nitrous oxides.

The good news is that tons of people are working on this problem from all different angles, from expanding public transportation, to planting vegetative buffers to block pollution, to ambitious projects like Vision 980 that aim to remove a portion of the freeway entirely.

Worried about big tech coming to West Oakland? Warren Logan from City People shares some pointers to get involved.

Prometheus and Tesla both signed leases in the American Steel campus on Mandela Parkway in West Oakland last week. We don’t know exactly how they’ll use the space yet— but it’ll probably be for some kind of advanced manufacturing.

What do you think about big tech coming to West Oakland? How could it impact the neighborhood? And what might neighbors demand from the City and from tech companies to make sure new manufacturing actually benefits West Oakland?

That sore throat or itchy nose might not be allergies: if you live in a neighborhood like Acorn or the Lower Bottoms that’s close to the Port of Oakland, it could be a physical symptom of dirty diesel pollution.

We can feel air pollution, but it’s not always easy to track, or identify where it’s coming from. That’s why the Port is setting up “fenceline monitors”: air monitors around the perimeter of their property. This data will help us figure out where air pollution is coming from, and what mitigations could help.
Fenceline monitoring is part of Clean Ports, a multi-million dollar project to transition hundreds of trucks, forklifts, and other machines off dirty diesel. Learn more at woeip.org/clean-ports.

Special message from Wanda Stewart, Executive Director of Common Vision: Prescott Elementary School is getting a new playground, and they need some community care to get it set up in time for the start of the school year!

Common Vision, KABOOM!, Eat Learn Play Foundation and OUSD are holding three build days this week. They need 150 volunteers total. Come through to help build a playground and meet your neighbors!

We teach free science classes for kids ages 5 to 13 and their caregivers!

The lessons build on each other every month, but you can also come for just one. They give kids and families a foundation in air quality, community health, and West Oakland’s fascinating local environment.

These workshops are funded by Clean Ports, a $322 million investment in zero-emission technology at the Port of Oakland. WOEIP, the West Oakland Cultural Action Network, Black Cultural Zone, and Rose Foundation for Community and Environment are working with the Port to monitor the project and keep the community informed.
