What does home mean to you?

What would it look like if your home could never be taken from you; if it wasn’t something contingent on money or someone else’s decision?

If this feels like a fantasy, ask yourself why we instead accept instability as a part of our lives. Political imagination asks something difficult of us; to admit we want what we’ve already decided we’re not allowed to have.

We invite you imagine a world you’ve never seen. And to take seriously the possibility that it could exist.

What if our systems served the protection of our lives instead of racial capitalism? What if the systems our country operated under didn’t back us into a corner we need to pay to get out of? What would it look like to begin to repair deep harm done to our communities?

We’ve accepted manufactured fear and unnecessary death for so long that we’ve forgotten that it’s possible to live in a world without it. Imagine what that world might look like with Danielle Sered of and us in the latest episode of the What if? podcast, out now.

The pandemic showed us what’s possible when we choose and prioritize care. Imagine if we treated that health crisis the same way as the economic crisis we’re facing now. We can choose to center care again.

Listen to this episode of What if? with now, anywhere you get your podcasts!

When so much around us is shifting, our instinct is to react. To duck and hide, to cling to what feels solid while the ground moves beneath us. But what if we met change with curiosity instead, trusting that imagination can make something new out of what’s falling apart? Imagination is how we breathe through change and begin again.

Season one of What If? begins November 14, with episodes releasing weekly. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. Link in our bio 🌻🌷🌹

Celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day by listening and learning every day. Indigenous people have always protected the earth. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the ground we walk on, and the creatures we protect. Especially now, as our planet and people are desperate for care, their leadership shows us what intentional stewardship looks like.
These words come from , our first Futurist-in-Residence for Policy and Advocacy. Through her work in mental wellness, civic engagement, and environmental protection, Cheyenne is helping us imagine a future rooted in Indigenous sovereignty and collective care. 🌿

What does it really cost to show up as a Black woman at work?

calls this The Double Tax – it’s the pink tax, and then some. Black women rack up hidden costs every day to hold up workplaces that weren’t meant for them. Those costs not only fall on Black women, but are a domino effect across the entire economy. But a better one is possible, and it starts with centering the women who’ve been carrying it all along.

Work could be a foundation for collective security, built so no one is left to struggle alone. Right now, companies you’ve never heard of decide what gets built in your neighborhood. They’re thinking about profit margins and how to corner a market. You’re thinking about what your kids will grow up around, where you and your friends can meet on the weekend, and which parks feel safe at night. The economy has been sold piece by piece to people far from the places they profit from. But we can take it back.

Businesses can be owned by the people who keep them running and shaped by the communities they serve. That’s what Legacy Lab invests in. Black-owned, community-rooted businesses that keep wealth and decision-making close to home. Because when the people doing the work hold the power, we can decide what our neighborhoods become.

The deck has been stacked against us for a long time. While most people trade their time, dignity, and futures for a paycheck, the wealthy grow richer without lifting a finger. Minimum wage has been frozen since 2009, a handful of corporations dictate prices, and policies are written to keep the powerful, powerful.

Working harder isn’t the solution when the scales are tilted this way. But we’re not powerless. Fighting back means showing solidarity when workers organize, intentionally spending money on businesses that treat people fairly, and consistently refusing to prop up a system that never worked for us to begin with.

As says, what good is the ability to vote if you’re hungry? The ability to civilly protest if you’re unhoused or without healthcare? Bootstrapping is a myth — and it’s time we replace that myth with fundamental economic rights.

Black businesses rooted in collective ownership have long been building economic power, often without the capital or recognition they deserve. At Common Future, we believe these models are the future. That’s why we’re launching the Legacy Lab: a new initiative investing in Black, community-owned businesses and transforming how entrepreneurship is defined and supported. The Legacy Lab shifts capital and strengthens community-led solutions that are already working. Learn how we’re backing leaders and building an economy that works for everyone:

Investing in businesses that invest in the communities around them.
