Today, on International Overdose Awareness Day, people around the world are remembering the loved ones lost to substance use, alcohol use, overdose, and other drug-related deaths.

Reflection House is deeply honored to host Garrett County’s International Overdose Awareness Day event alongside the many local organizations, recovery programs, community partners, and volunteers who have come together to make this meaningful evening possible.

As part of tonight’s event, we are sharing this memorial tribute featuring 78 deeply loved people from our community and beyond. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who trusted us with their loved one’s photograph and memory. We hold that trust with great care, and it is an honor to help share that love and remember their lives.

These 78 loved ones represent one small part of a much larger story of love, loss, and remembrance. This video honors those pictured and named, those whose photographs were not included, and all those being remembered today around the world.

Every person mattered. Every person was loved. Every loss has left an absence in the lives of family members, friends, and communities.

We warmly invite everyone in our community to join us this evening as we remember those we have lost, celebrate recovery, share hope, and remind those who are still struggling that they are not alone.

Tomorrow is International Overdose Awareness Day

When someone dies from an overdose or drug/alcohol related death, their story does not end with their passing. Their absence continues to be felt in the lives of the people who loved them, in the milestones they miss, the memories carried forward, and the countless ways their families and communities are forever changed.

We are deeply grateful to Concerted Care Group of Cumberland for sharing this powerful video with us for Garrett County’s International Overdose Awareness Day. A special thank-you to Margaret Sines, Director, and Shannon Thomas, Clinical Manager, for helping bring these voices and stories together and for the compassionate work they and their team do every day in our neighboring community.

Concerted Care Group provides support for individuals living with substance use and mental health challenges, including medication-assisted treatment, individual and group counseling, intensive outpatient treatment, peer recovery support, and psychiatric rehabilitation services. If you or someone you love needs support, please reach out to their Cumberland team at 240-410-0885. Help is available, and no one should have to take the first step alone.

The caring team from Concerterd Care Group of Cumberland will be a resource vendor at the 2026 Garrett County International Overdose Awareness Day event. They would love for you to stop by and talk with them.
Thank you to each person in this video who spoke so openly about their loved one and what life has looked like since their loss. It takes tremendous courage to share something so deeply personal.

As a community, we remember those we have lost, surround those who continue to grieve, and work together so that fewer families experience this heartbreak.

This is what community looks like: planting together, growing together, and sharing the harvest.

The kindness planted in the Reflection House garden is now growing into an abundance that we can share with our whole community.

Fresh vegetables are available for free at Reflection House. Everyone is welcome to stop by, take a bag, and choose some vegetables to enjoy. No questions asked, and no money is needed. This is simply neighbors sharing with neighbors.

We are also so grateful to the community members who have already taken vegetables and even brought produce from their own gardens to exchange. Watching this grow from a garden supported by our community into a place where neighbors share with one another has been truly special.

If you have extra vegetables you would like to share, you are welcome to bring them to us. If you would like to support Reflection House, donations are also gratefully accepted at the door, but no donation is needed to take vegetables.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the Kitzmiller Lions Club at the fair this Saturday. Reflection House board members, staff, and residents will be helping prepare and serve fair food throughout the day!

The Garden That Community Built

Sometimes, the most meaningful things begin with a small patch of earth, a few seeds, and people willing to lend a hand. This year, our garden has become something truly special. It has grown fresh food, of course, but it has also grown peace, pride, connection, and plenty of good conversations along the way. We truly could not have created such a beautiful and plentiful garden without the kindness of some wonderful people in our community.

💚 First, a very special thank you to our wonderful neighbor, Bubba Marucci. Bubba generously donated the raised garden bed frames that became some of the foundation of our garden. He drove over with his tractor to unload everything for us and later came back with even more garden supplies. His kindness and willingness to help made such a difference, and we are incredibly grateful to have neighbors like Bubba.

🔨 We'd also like to thank a young man completing community service hours, who spent a day assembling every raised bed. He carefully fit together each piece, leveled each one, and pounded rebar into the ground to make sure they would be sturdy for the planting season. His hard work helped turn a pile of materials into the beautiful garden we see today.

🌿 Ashley Bodkins, Master Gardener Coordinator with the Garrett County Master Gardeners of University of Maryland Extension, helped us plan the garden, decide what and where to plant, and generously donated plants and seeds. Ashley helped us take a bare piece of ground and imagine what it could become.

🌱 Sam Dixon of Sams Agway gave us a generous discount on a wonderful blend of mushroom soil and topsoil. That rich soil gave our plants the strong beginning they needed, and this may be our best garden yet! There is something fitting about a community garden being built on a foundation of community kindness, and Sam and his team were part of that foundation and great to work with.

🦋 Julie with the Mountain Laurel Garden Club donated a beautiful collection of native plants. They helped turn these spaces into places where residents can pause, breathe, and simply enjoy being outside.

🌸 Julie Wagner of Julie's Greenhouse & Landscaping LLC generously donated the bulk of the vegetable plants, flowers, and beautiful hanging baskets. Julie gave us much more than plants. She helped make our home beautiful and played a huge part in filling our garden with food. She also provided our residents with a day trip to her amazing greenhouse to pick out plants and enjoy all the beautiful creations she has available.

🥫 St Mark's Lutheran Church, Audrey, and Barb welcomed our residents and staff into their commercial kitchen to learn the art of pressure canning. We joined about 25 others and quickly felt right at home as we snapped beans, filled jars, talked, and learned together. The afternoon gave us much more than jars of green beans. It gave us time to slow down, connect with others, and take part in a tradition that has been passed from one kitchen and one generation to the next.

As you look through these photos, you're seeing so much more than a garden. You're seeing what can happen when neighbors, local businesses, organizations, volunteers, and community members come together to invest in others.

Thank you for believing in us, investing in us, and growing alongside us. We could not have created such a beautiful and plentiful garden without the kindness of some wonderful people in our community.
