This National Veterinary Technician Week, weā€™re celebrating Heather and Denishia, OASā€™s veterinary technicians, who bring skill, patience, and tenderness to the animals in their care.

At a municipal shelter, patients arrive with all kinds of needs, and often an unknown history. Caring for them takes medical expertise and the ability to turn compassion into quick thinking and action. This yearā€™s theme of ā€œCredentialed Veterinary Technicians: Endless Compassion, Expert Care; Celebrating the Soul of Veterinary Medicine,ā€ feels like the perfect way to describe the dedicated vet techs at Oakland Animal Services.

Heather and Denishia, thank you for the knowledge you bring, the comfort you offer, and the care you put into every patient. Oaklandā€™s animals are lucky to have you. šŸ¾

Senior dogs have so much love and silliness to share, and weā€™re so happy sweet girl Mandy got her chance at finding a home!

Adopted earlier this year after landing at Oakland Animal Services as a senior, this sweet, playful girl loves backyard ball games, walks around Berkeley, and supervising her puppy friends. (Someone has to manage the youngsters! Kids these days!)

From her foster home to her forever home, Mandy had a team cheering her on. Your support helps FOAS fund OASā€™s dog foster and adoption teams, making happy beginnings like hers possible.

Every day, this community helps us make a difference for Oaklandā€™s animals. Today, weā€™re looking back and how it all started.

In 2001, lifelong friends Willow Liroff and Megan Webb showed up at Oaklandā€™s city shelter (run by OPD at the time) asking how to volunteer. An animal control officer handed them a key and said ā€œGood luck,ā€ not expecting them to return.

But they kept coming back. Walking dogs, lending a hand, and eventually building the OAS volunteer program. Along the way, they recruited Martha Cline, whose dedication helped that program grow.

In 2005, the three founded Friends of Oakland Animal Services to support the volunteer program and fund medical care for shelter animals. Now, 21 years later, FOAS funds 17 staff members who run the lifesaving programs at OAS in partnership with city staff. Their determination lives on in everything we do. šŸ’›

Thank you to everyone who joined the Jack Oā€™ London Pup Crawl and brought the Halloween spirit in support of Oaklandā€™s animals! And a huge thank you to Jack London Improvement District for bringing folks and their pups out for such a howlin good time. We are so lucky to have community supporters like this šŸ§”

We recently had a special tour at the shelter and welcomed these wonderful 6th graders from San Carlos who worked on a project to help lost pets find their way back home.

These thoughtful young entrepreneurs created dog tags with scannable QR codes that reveal a contact phone number: A clever way to help reunite lost dogs with their people when reading a tiny tag up close might be tricky.

In addition to creating the tags, they sold them and decided to donate the funds raised to help Oakland Animal Services! We are constantly impressed and amazed by the creativity and generosity of the community, and we are so grateful to these young folks who thought of helping Oaklandā€™s animals!

Our recent community clinic at St. Vincent de Paul in Oakland brought essential care to dogs and cats in our community. Weā€™re grateful to help care for Oaklandā€™s animals and support the people who love them. Thank you to the staff, volunteers, and families who made it possible!

After over 120 days and ending up on the priority list at Oakland Animal Services, Cassio went home with his new family last month! And we have a wonderful update:

His introduction to his new doggy sibling went great and his folks describe him as ā€œperfect.ā€ This sweet boy now spends his days in a loving home and happily snoring in their arms. Happy tails to Cassio!

Hats off to the incredible volunteers and team at the shelter that help dogs like Cassio find homes! šŸ„³ā¤ļø

Somewhere between ā€œnailed itā€ and ā€œis that my dog?ā€ we raised over $71,000 for Oaklandā€™s animals together!! šŸŽØšŸŽ‰

Over 1,000 artists signed up, and portrait requests spanned the animal kingdom beyond dogs and cats: fish, squirrels, horses, bunnies, birds, ants, turtles, and more. No species was safe from our creative interpretations.

Portrait orders closed a while ago, but the behind the scenes work has kept going. As we tie up the final loose ends of Bad Art 2026, we wanted to celebrate everyone who ordered a portrait, volunteered, or picked up a paintbrush.

THANK YOU. Your generosity, time, and willingness to embrace the silliness and fun made Bad Art 2026 something special. Weā€™re so grateful for this community for supporting our mission to bring homes, health, and happiness to Oaklandā€™s animals. ā¤ļø
