Because philanthropic wealth is the product of the extractive economy, philanthropy’s role in the Just Transition is to turn extracted resources into resources for the regenerative economy.

While we have inherited extractive systems, we have the agency to choose what we do with what we’ve inherited. Justice Funders believes that those in the philanthropic sector play a critical role in leveraging their power to redistribute wealth, democratize power, and shift economic control to communities.

“I imagine the powerful role philanthropy can play in supporting bold solutions for systems change by resourcing new paths toward a more regenerative and racially just future. A Just Transition will require us to build new systems, practices, and institutions from the ground up that are rooted in honoring the sacredness of all life.”

We asked Mark Chavez of Climate Justice Alliance: Why should foundations divest from the dominant financial system and redirect that capital into movement-led, community-controlled institutions?

He responds:

"Simple. If a foundation is working to advance the well-being of people or the planet, there’s no other option at this point than to divest from the dominant financial system and move their money into movement-led, community-controlled institutions that center justice, equity, and sustainability. Your work is no longer legitimate during this pivotal time of crisis if your efforts and assets continue to be held and invested within a financial system that supports human activity destroying our environment, shackles the vast majority of people to extractive debt, and props up corporations that are contributing to the erosion of our (already precarious) democracy.

Mark will be joining an incredible line up of speakers Justice Funders' annual convening, State of the Movement 2023!"

🗓 NEXT Wednesday, Feb 8th.

They will discuss (1) what local regenerative economies communities are building look like and, (2) how they are organizing philanthropic investors to redirect their resources in support of these efforts.

Season 2 of "STORIES FROM HOME: Moving the Just Transition" grounds us in the history of environmental justice, climate justice organizing and present day Just Transitions. Each episode deep dives into different dimensions of the movement – from the importance of community-led solutions to the climate crisis, to just what is a false “solution” anyway, to how we relate to one another in just relationship– with our host Keenan Rhodes, and the climate justice leaders who serve as our guides and teachers.
