As Labor Day comes to a close, the Bay Area Black Nurses Association would like to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the dedication, resilience, and contributions of workers everywhere.

This September, BABNA stands in solidarity with our community members and families living with sickle cell disease (SCD), and with those working every day to improve care, raise awareness, and advance health equity.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that can cause severe pain, anemia, infections, organ damage, and other serious complications. While advances in treatment have improved outcomes, many people living with SCD continue to experience significant barriers to timely, compassionate, and equitable healthcare.

Awareness matters. Advocacy matters. Believing patients matter.

As nurses, we have an important role in:
🩺 Providing culturally responsive, patient-centered care
🧠 Recognizing and treating pain without stigma or bias
📚 Educating patients, families, and communities
🤝 Supporting access to specialists, treatment, and resources
✊🏾 Advocating for health equity and improved outcomes in communities disproportionately affected by SCD

This month, let’s listen to the lived experiences of people with sickle cell disease, challenge misconceptions, and continue working toward a healthcare system where every patient is heard, believed, respected, and cared for.

The Community Care Initiative, (CCI) education series was a success: “Navigating The SF Heath Maze.” discussed how to better understand your discharge summary, how to communicate your needs to your provider effectively, and heard from our expert panel from Zuckerberg elder- centered Emergency Dept, The George W Davis Senior Center Adult Day program, and Marin City Enhanced Care Management Program.
