GRANTEE SITE VISIT - Communities for a Healthy Bay (CHB)

We recently joined on their patrol boat for a firsthand look at their work protecting Commencement Bay and the South Puget Sound.

Our visit took us along the Hylebos Waterway, where CHB monitors industrial activity, identifies and documents potential pollution, and works with regulatory agencies to strengthen clean water protections.

CHB is the only environmental organization in the region with its own patrol vessel, giving its team a unique view of what is happening on the water. Their South Sound Stewardship and Protection Program also brings youth and community members into environmental education and stewardship while working with partners to reduce pollution entering the Sound.

We are proud to support CHB and the grassroots organizations working every day for cleaner water, healthier communities, and a thriving Puget Sound.

Grantee Spotlight: Earth Team

Where does household hazardous waste really go when we throw it “away”?

Students at Arroyo High School explored that question through There Is No Away, an educational film created through an Earth Team internship project in the East Bay.

interns helped write the script, shape the educational content, and film on location at UC Berkeley, San Leandro City Hall, and the Hayward Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The film shows how hazardous waste does not simply disappear—it can make its way back into our air, water, wildlife, and food systems.

The students premiered the finished film for classmates, teachers, staff, and families at Earth Team’s annual Open House, and it will continue to serve as an educational resource for future community outreach.

We are proud to highlight this creative example of young people using storytelling and environmental education to make complex environmental issues accessible to their communities.

This project was supported with funding from a California Department of Toxic Substances Control settlement which was administered through the Rose Foundation.
