Honoring Earth Day and the Heroes Who Defend It – 2026 Anthony Grassroots Prize Winner: Riverside Neighbors Opposing Warehouses (R-NOW)

Rose is proud to announce the 2026 Anthony Grassroots Environmental Prize winner: Riverside Neighbors Opposing Warehouses (R-NOW)

What started as neighbors speaking up turned into a movement that stopped a massive warehouse project in the Inland Empire—one of the most polluted, warehouse-heavy regions in the country.

What they achieved:

🌏 Blocked an 800-acre mega-warehouse development

🌏 Defended communities from increased truck pollution

🌏 Mobilized hundreds of residents to show up and be heard

And when it mattered most? They packed the hearing—and won unanimously.

✨ This is what it looks like when communities organize.

✨ This is what it looks like when people fight for their future.

✨ This is grassroots power—from the ground up.

Celebrate R-NOW with us today.

In East Oakland, a bicycle is more than a way to get around—it’s a tool for environmental justice, community health, and everyday freedom.

Cycles of Change (CoC) is helping residents reclaim that power. Through The Bikery, a community bike shop offering sliding-scale repairs and hands-on mechanic education, makes safe, affordable transportation accessible to everyone.

Their Bike Club and UpCycle programs open doors for Title I students and low-income adults, teaching basic bike mechanics and providing access to bikes—turning mobility into opportunity. And every ride helps reduce fossil fuel use and air pollution in neighborhoods that have carried the highest burden.

This is the kind of grassroots leadership that inspires us: practical, community-rooted solutions that make daily life healthier and more sustainable.

Kayaks + Community Power on Lake Union!

Earlier this fall, our Program Officer Timothy Bell joined our partners at for a kayak cleanup on Seattle’s Lake Union — a stunning urban lake with a complex legacy of industrial pollution.

While the shoreline looks pristine, toxic sediments and microplastics remain a persistent challenge beneath the surface.

The volunteers spent a beautiful sunny day paddling and collecting debris. The #1 culprit? Styrofoam bits washed in through stormwater — breaking down into microplastics that settle in the lakebed and enter the food web.

Community action makes a difference. From cleanups to policy change to smarter stormwater solutions, every effort adds up. Huge thanks to all the volunteers who paddled, sorted, and took the time to care for our community!

Swipe to see the volunteers in action cleaning up the debris!

💚 Big news from the Rose Foundation! 💚

We’re beyond excited to welcome Deb Self as our next Executive Director, starting August 18, 2025!

Deb brings over four decades of environmental and nonprofit leadership to Rose, with deep commitment to justice and community empowerment. From leading landmark legal campaigns to stop pollution to restoring ecosystems and building youth leadership programs, she’s dedicated her life to fighting for clean air, safe water, and healthy communities—especially for low-income and BIPOC neighborhoods across the South and California’s East Bay.

Her track record includes:
• Tripling funding & building workplace equity at Greater Farallones Association
• Leading pollution litigation & directing millions to frontline communities through the Rose Foundation
• Securing major gifts and aligning philanthropy with justice at Earthjustice

Deb’s heart, strategy, and deep community ties make her the perfect leader for this next chapter. As we deepen and expand our support for grassroots environmental organizations and consumer protections, she’ll help carry forward our mission to ensure those most impacted lead the solutions.

Please join us in giving Deb a warm welcome!
