Did you ever wonder what Lake Apopka means?
___________________________________________________
According to the "Florida Place Names of Indian Origin and Seminole Personal Names," by William A. Read, Ph. D., the source of this name stems from the Seminole language - aha, "potato," and papka, "eating place," from papita, "to eat" - "potato eating place."
The first settlers on the shores of Lake Apopka were all the way back in approximately 7500 BCE. The Seminoles, from which the name Apopka comes from, settled here in the early 19th century. Apparently, it was a great place to eat potatoes! 🥔🥔🥔
Any guesses what the name Oakland means? 😉
