Last Saturday, September 26, CCIJ was truly honored to host a community symposium alongside incredible leaders who were formerly or are currently detained in immigration detention centers in California.

Our panel conversations shared how inside leaders and outside advocates can work together to file habeas corpus petitions to free people from detention, conduct medical advocacy to expose medical neglect and achieve bare minimum medical care that is otherwise denied, and agitate to organize for change.

We are inspired by the knowledge, experience, commitment and talent of the panelists, and are grateful to each and every one of them.

We are filled with hope and determination for the struggles we continue to face every day!

As part of its 30th anniversary, the California Access to Justice Commission recognized CCIJ as an honoree who reflects the many ways California’s access-to-justice community is working to close the justice gap.

The Access Commission selected CCIJ as one of the six grantees whose work represents the range of projects supported through the Access Commission’s work, including infrastructure development, technology innovation, and expanded services for immigrants, rural residents, and other vulnerable communities.

“California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice (CCIJ) is being recognized for its work supporting immigrants detained in California and strengthening the statewide infrastructure available to respond when individuals are arrested, detained, or placed in removal proceedings. CCIJ helped establish a statewide Legal Services Collaborative with partner agencies, expanded rural detention-response capacity, supported an attorney-of-the-day model at a new immigration court, modernized pro bono referral and legal-assistance strategies, and developed screening tools to identify detained immigrants with mental health disabilities who may be entitled to representation. By combining direct legal intervention with coordination, rapid-response systems, technical assistance, and shared infrastructure, CCIJ helps ensure that people do not lose their rights simply because the legal system is difficult to reach or navigate.”

In ICE detention you can file a complaint, but does anything get fixed?

The formal ‘grievance’ system in ICE detention is designed to give the appearance of oversight where there isn’t any real accountability. Sometimes the same officer whose abuse is being complained about is the one who reviews the complaint, and reports of retaliation are common.

Despite the risk of retaliation, many people in immigration detention choose to file grievances because it’s one of the few official ways to document the abuses and dangerous conditions they face. These can give individuals and organizations something to point to when we take action to expose the injustices of detention.

Ultimately, no amount of oversight can make an unjust system just. That’s why the only answer to immigrant detention is its abolition.

A new In These Times report by Khawla Nakua highlights the sexual violence of strip searches in jails, prisons and ICE detention centers around the country.

FCI Dublin is a former federal women’s prison that was closed in 2024 after incarcerated survivors organized to expose rampant sexual abuse by guards. In 2025 we learned that ICE was looking into re-opening the infamous prison as an immigration detention center.

The guards at ICE detention centers use the same dehumanizing and violent tactics as guards in jails and prisons. It is unacceptable in any setting.

Here’s the scoop:

There are no more immigration court hearings at 100 Montgomery St. in San Francisco
Cases are being transferred to the Concord Immigration Court and rescheduled
Some hearings that were scheduled for years in the future are being rescheduled for just two weeks away
The Trump administration is attacking due process by shutting down a court that had a robust network of legal service organizations nearby

If you miss any immigration hearings, a judge may order you deported in your absence, so it is important to know when and where your hearings are.
