The Oakland Education Association (OEA) has called a strike vote for Monday, April 17th. As Oakland district families, we are enraged by this action. Our kids’ education is too important to be used as a pawn by adults who are using bad-faith tactics in (what are supposed to be) good-faith negotiations. We fully support teachers being paid well, and the current OUSD offer amounts to a significant pay increase for teachers, in some cases a 20% increase!

Sign on to our petition to join in a public sentiment that does NOT support teacher strikes that disrupt any of our students' learning, especially our students who are struggling the most in our schools right now. Signing this petition is also important to urge OUSD to take the legal action necessary to stop this. This website created by OEA teachers includes a plan to have an open-ended strike this Fall.

Right now, OEA members have engaged hundreds of Hills families for support. They have had presentations included in their PTA newsletters (Montclair) and personal text messages from their teachers asking for home visits next week. Meanwhile, thousands of flatlands families will be blindsided with a text message from the district communicating to them that they will not be able to bring their kids to school the next day.

EdSource will be hosting a roundtable featuring our ED, Megan Bacigalupi, and others: What parents and teachers can do to get the state's youngest students reading by third grade

Jan. 31, 4pm.

Register here:

Parents and teachers are on the frontlines of California's literacy crisis amid a national debate on how best to teach reading. Both groups often lack the tools to get involved and be heard. This roundtable will focus on what parents and teachers need to know about the state's reading dilemma. What....

See CA Parent Power ED Megan Bacigalupi’s reaction to the Gov budget:

What should be the priorities for supporting K-12 education during this economic downturn, and how well does the proposed budget meet them?

Our state leaders must ensure students and teachers have the supports in place to enable all students to read on grade level, and this budget falls far short. This proposed budget has hundreds of millions going to early literacy efforts, but it’s missing key pieces enabling that money to be effective: no comprehensive state literacy plan, no requirement that curriculum and instruction align with the science of reading, and no mandated dyslexia screening in K-2 as 40 other states require. If enacted, California would waste hundreds of millions on failed balanced literacy programs, doing little to help our literacy crisis.

Megan Bacigalupi is the co-founder and executive director of CA Parent Power, a statewide parent advocacy organization focused on literacy.

Great piece on the fight over math curriculum in CA and the dangers of doing nothing

"It’s also important to note that California’s adoption list is only advisory. The state has chosen not to require or even encourage districts to adopt high-quality materials. As a result of this hands-off approach, even a quick perusal of school report cards shows that California schools and districts have adopted a dizzying array of materials, many of them poorly rated by curriculum experts (if they’ve adopted any materials at all)."

While policymakers and advocates are arguing over how best to teach math, an increasing number of California's students are failing to learn math.

It’s been quite a year! Our last newsletter of 2022 highlighted the education news and stories we thought were most important for CA parents and it should be no surprise many focused on our literacy crisis in our state.

We hope you enjoy some time with family and friends over the holidays and we can’t wait to get back to work supporting students and families in 2023!
