Frontline Catalysts

Frontline Catalysts Our mission is to empower frontline youth to lead the movement for transformative climate justice.

Frontline youth of color carry the legitimacy of lived experience to shine the spotlight on climate impacts. We must provide the opportunity and resources for youth to lead a transformative environmental justice movement. Their transformation of the community will be profound, systemic, and conducted within a racial equity framework anchored by socio-economic justice.

We had some special guests join us for USFA garden club! Students Josephine and Sarine from UC Berkeley Civic Imagination Studio spent some time with our garden club students to get them envisioning their dream space. We dreamed up a safe home for bees and other pollinating critters, comfortables outdoor places to rest, as well as edible foods everywhere: carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, cherries, apples and watermelon. Thanks to this guided activity and our students' passionate visions, this garden will be popping by summer! 🥕🍏🍒🍉😋

Some special moments from our Rudsdale Trimester 3 Climate Justice Intensive! Over the past 2 weeks, we led Rudsdale students through daily lessons about climate justice issues, discussing topics from Pachamama and tipping points, to redlining and environmental racism. Some standout moments are tower building challenge where students engaged with concepts of capitalism and its harm on people and the environment, as well as a planting activity our SFSU intern Hector lead students through, where they planted turnips alongside something that they want to grow in their own lives! Their next project will be video creation about climate justice issues in Oakland that they feel passionate about.

It is such a joy to work with these incredible student leaders and we are excited to see where their creativity takes them!🌱🤲🏾🌍

YOUTH POWER IN SACRAMENTO

Youth from frontline communities in Oakland visited legislators at the California State Capitol to advocate for AB1777, a bill that affirms California Air Resources Board’s authority to regulate indirect sources so that companies are held accountable for contributions to air pollution. If passed, the bill would (1) reduce pollution and (2) support cleaner technologies, ensuring a healthier future for community members in the East Bay.

TODAY is the last day to apply for Frontline Voices!

Highschoolers and recent grads are invited to join us this summer for a 3-week workshop series creating powerful multimedia projects.

This is your chance to explore real environmental issues impacting your community and learn how to tell stories that matter. Throughout the program, you’ll connect your lived experiences to creative storytelling. Step into the studio at Hip Hop for Change, create beats for a music video, or create your own short documentary exploring an issue that matters to you. Former students have explored topics from getting the lead out of OUSD to documenting food insecurity in East Oakland. Whatever your vision is, we have space for you!

We’ve got you covered with breakfast and lunch everyday, and students who complete the program will receive a $500 stipend.

Let's walk and talk! Did you know that Oakland's tree canopy is denser in wealthier, whiter neighborhoods?
In a city rife with the impacts of redlining and racial and economic injustice, why are green third spaces important; how are they complicated by things like access and surveillance, and what can we do to steward and expand these spaces?

Join us on a trip to the Gardens at Lake Merritt and while we talk about it! Also, watch to the end to learn more about our Seeds of Change event and how you can make a difference right here in Oakland, the link to sign up for the workshop is also in our bio.
