It’s time for a SCC history post! Each week SCC will be focusing on an artist/person of color. Our first post will be about the multi-talented writer and director Julie Dash. Breaking through racial and gender boundaries, Dash was the first African American woman to have a full-length feature film, Daughters of the Dust. In 2004, the Library of Congress placed Daughters of the Dust in the National Film Registry where it joins a select group of films preserved as national treasures. It’s visual aesthetic would go on to influence popular artists such as Beyoncé in her acclaimed visual album Lemonade. Dash’s work explores the many complexities of the black experience, often times centering the black female experience. Her filmography includes Daughters of the Dust, The Rosa Parks Story, Love Song, etc. Today let’s celebrate the excellence that is Julie Dash and her gift.
Feel free to suggest any people of color that you would love SCC to feature on our page. Love y’all!
