Artists Building Communities

Artists Building Communities We started as a rag tag group of recently out-of-work artists from the Vulcan Lofts who came together to build emergency homes at the start of this pandemic.

We have now built 12 tiny homes in encampments in Oakland so far and we are not stopping! We are seeking a steward of social media and a steward of videography. Check out our job postings on this page and message us to find out more.

Today is bittersweet. For over 4 years, Artists Building Communities brought dignity to our unhoused neighbors

In partnership with our unhoused neighbors, we built 15 up to code emergency tiny homes in Oakland.

Today, Dmitry (Director of Perspective and Innovation) passed the first box of screws to the amazing artist Danni from .community

ABC is closing on this high note as we've decided to donate all of our remaining build materials and stored tools to this deserving community. They're preparing to build permanent affordable housing in the form of tiny homes.

We want to thank the 300+ volunteers who helped us along every step of the way. Thank you to everyone who donated funds, food, materials, and time towards this project.

Thank you to all of our inspiring partners πŸ™πŸΏπŸ™πŸ½πŸ™πŸ» especially the , who funded our final two builds and made sure that Kimba's tiny house was saved from demolition.

Of the 15 tiny homes we've built, 5 recipients are now in permanent affordable housing. We are hoping this number continues to grow and our organizers will stay connected in support of this dream.

Thanks again! We could have never done this without your help. πŸ πŸ’šβœ¨οΈ

DONATE TODAY!

Hello everyone!
Although we no longer operate, one of Artists Building Communities old partners is seeking $5k more to reach their annual operating budget.

They have a generous donor who is matching everything that people donate up until July 30th!

Support them in bringing hygiene products like feminine care, wipes, underwear, and socks to those who need it most. Low income and unhoused people deserve the dignity that Simply the Basics offers.

Through them we were able to supply Cob on Wood 's Resiliency Center with 5 different sizes of underwear for women and men.

This is so needed, please support them if possible!

Simply the Basics is the first nationally reaching Hygiene Bank. This informational video will help you understand our programs, our impact, and our goals! w...

β€œOn Monday, April 22nd, the Supreme Court will begin to hear oral arguments for Johnson v. Grants Pass, a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that barred municipalities across the western United States from punishing their unhoused residents for sleeping outside, even when there are no available shelter options. Many think that the Supreme Court will likely side with the establishment that has fought to continue to sweep its poorest constituents, so it’s imperative that the people show up in solidarity with our unhoused neighbors!
Join the Bay Area mobilization on Monday, April 22nd at 10:00am as we march from the Federal Building, to the State Building, and then ending at San Francisco City Hall. At each stop there will be speakers representing a large solidarity network of organizations.”

Next Weekend Residents of the Wood Street Commons will bike from Oakland to Sacramento to meet with our Senator, Assembly members and possibly our Governor!

They aim to advocate for their unhoused members currently living at the BOSS Cabins on Wood Street. The conditions are poor and the services are lacking.

They want to work with politicians on improving their conditions, and better centering the voices of the unhoused in decisions that effect them. This is necessary so that they will have the best chance at maintaining healthy and abundant lives.

The Wood Street Commons need $4,000 more to fund:

Artists Building Communties

We are a political collective of five people who have the goal of housing 1/2 of Berkeley’s unhoused population by May 2021. Four out of our five founders have experienced homelessness at some point in our lives and we are tired of sitting patiently while our cities drag their feet in fixing this humanitarian crisis. Our mission is to provide dignity and assistance in any and all ways we possibly can. We are using a housing first approach and will start our journey off by building 5 tiny homes for the folks at Berkeley’s Sea Breeze encampment in the beautiful Berkeley Marina.

While the city slowly votes to turn Berkeley’s only State/CalTrain land into it’s first official β€œoutdoor shelter”, we are there on the ground providing ongoing aid alongside the inspiring folks from the β€œWhere Do We Go?” movement.

The global health crisis is hitting our houseless communities the hardest, with our network of activist lawyers, social workers, case workers, doctors, nurses, dentists, media personnel, city planners, conscious developers, business owners, chefs, community members and artists, there is no limit to what we can do.
