Back to the good news:
China just texted to tell us that she, Omar, and the dogs got their apartment—and they are moving in as we speak!
We have served China for *over five years*, and she has been trying to get housed that entire time.
The journey has been long, and difficult...
She lost her partner, P.E.A.C.E. She and Omar were uprooted by two particularly brutal sweeps and had to start over each time. They spent a year in transitional housing, only to have that program end without actually housing them. Along the way, China developed a bad knee that makes walking difficult, and she grieved both P.E.A.C.E. and one of her beloved dogs.
The resilience and courage it took to survive all that is more than most of us can imagine.
But let’s be clear: it should never be this dang hard.
People should not have to struggle for five years just to get a safe place to live. Meanwhile, trolls and bots have seemingly kind people parroting garbage like, “They don’t want housing,” “After a few years outside, people are impossible to house,” or even, “They should be institutionalized.”
China and Omar wanted to be housed. They kept trying. The system kept making them wait, and worse-- making false promises and forcing them to start over.
Omar also finally completed what was supposed to be one year of probation—after six years. Staying connected and meeting every requirement while homeless is no small thing. That took incredible tenacity, too.
And the amount of help you all provided over these five years is honestly stunning:
🐾 Food, crates, playpens, and supplies for all the dogs before we had a pet-care partner
⛺ More tents and tarps than we could ever count
👕 Clothing and sleeping bags
🎒 Countless relief bags filled with hygiene supplies, hydration, and food
🍲 Meals, meals, and more meals
📱 Multiple phones and phone minutes so they could stay connected
💻 A laptop so Omar could complete probation requirements and classes
🛴 A scooter so China could get around despite her knee
🛏️ Bedding and cleaning supplies for each new beginning

HAPI, our pet partner, also kept showing up for the dogs—including getting Bruno the dental surgery he needed and transporting him there.
None of this should have fallen on private donors. But it did—and you all stepped up whenever we asked.
And now, after everything, they made it.
China, Omar, and the dogs are home.
We are so damn proud of them. ❤️
