“Malcolm asked the Black American: Who taught you to hate yourself? Who taught you to be a pacifist? Was he a pacifist? Who said Black people cannot defend themselves? Does he defend himself? Who taught you not to go too far and too fast in your fight for freedom? Did he stand to lose something by the speed of your victory? Who taught you to vote for the fox to escape the wolf? What does the fox give in return?

…Malcolm always sought to expose those who were responsible for really maintaining the racism of this society rather than directing his fire at the puppets. He never tired of explaining and demonstrating that it was the federal government headed by the president that was responsible for maintaining racism in the North and South. He point out that LBJ’s closest friends in the Senate, Richard Russell, was leading the fight against the civil rights bill. Malcolm was challenged by a reporter who doubted that Johnson’s friendship with Russell proved anything. Malcolm looked at him with his usual smile and said, off the cuff, ‘If you tell me you are against robbing banks, and your best friend is Jesse James, I have grounds to doubt your sincerity.’

The final point in his political development which was so important was Malcolm’s revolutionary internationalism. Malcolm gave at least three reasons for his international outlook. First, was the common identity of the power structure which practiced racism in this country and which practiced imperialism abroad. Second, only through Afro-Americans realizing that they were part of a great majority of non-Whites in the world who were fighting for and winning freedom, would Black people have the courage to fight the battle for freedom at home by whatever means necessary. Last, was the fact that freedom could only be won everywhere. In Africa, Malcolm said, ‘Our problem is your problem…your problem will never be fully solved until and unless ours are solved. You will never be fully respected, until and unless we are also respected. You will never be recognized as free human beings until and unless we are also recognized and treated as human beings.”

California is occupied territory where our federal taxes fund ice raids, family separations and genocide. Billionaires run the state & deny healthcare, destroy the environment & fuel the affordability crisis. A better way is possible and the time is now.

Join Dr. Butch Ware, Brian McGinnis, Dr. Xavier Buck, Malik Edwards, Alia Sharrief, and Dr. Farima Pour-Khorshid in a discussion about what it means to build a people-powered California, where public wealth serves our communities instead of corporate interests.

Join us for a day of education, food, and fellowship as we commemorate the legacy of Bobby Hutton and the closing of Happy Birthday Oscar. RSVP LINK IN BIO.

Lil Bobby Hutton was the first recruit of the Black Panther Party. He served in many capacities, including as their Treasurer and participating in the famous protest of the Mulford Act at the California state capitol. He was tragically killed by Oakland Police Department just shy of his 18th birthday, also becoming the first life taken in the Party. Every year we gather to reflect, share, and reinvigorate the revolution Lil Bobby Hutton started with speeches, films, and performances.

This event coincides with the closing of Happy Birthday Oscar, our seminal exhibit commemorating what would have been the 40th birthday of Oscar Grant, whose life was taken by BART police in 2009.

Please find the day’s full itinerary below.

“America will not be able to fight every Black country in the world and fight a civil war at the same time. It is militarily impossible to do both of these things at once.”

Mumia in 1981 elected the President of the National Black Journalist Association, a Black Panther Deputy Minister of Information at the age of 14 and beyond was framed faced a flawed weaponized trial and sentenced to death in July 1982. After 30 years on Pennsylvania death-row solitary confinement and four signed death warrants attempts to permanently silence him by corrupted cops and state officials that knowingly politicized, weaponized, and implemented without a hearing in open court a unlawful life sentence. Yet, Mumia remains a voice for the voiceless. Evidence of his innocence exists, but he suffers health issues in prison. This struggle represents the larger fight against systemic injustice, fueling our quest for fairness and accountability. FREE MUMIA ABU JAMAL! FREE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS!
