About the Film: In the summer of 2022, nine people embarked on a two-month tour to 10 cities across the US, traveling 8,000 miles in a converted school bus to perform The BOX, a critically-acclaimed play about prison resistance.

The End of Isolation depicts their journey through the regions where incarceration is most brutal, from Arkansas to Missouri to Pennsylvania. The film features formerly incarcerated leaders who are organizing for transformative change and tells a story of victory against all odds, highlighting art’s power to inspire change and the collective power of those refusing to be crushed by state violence.

The End of Isolation follows a group of actors touring a play about solitary confinement called "The BOX" across the US.

Former Senator Mark Leno credits the momentum created by the 2016 world premiere of "The BOX" for contributing to the passing of his bill ending the use of solitary confinement in juvenile facilities in California.

This law has saved lives and served as a blueprint for the historic California Mandela Bill.

To date, thirty-five U.S. states have passed legislation limiting solitary confinement.

Given the powerful track record we’ve already established, our goal is to have an even greater impact, supporting the passage of state and local legislation.

The End of Isolation documentary is part of an ongoing movement to end solitary confinement and reduce reliance on prisons.

Tomorrow, 9/25, The End of Isolation screens at the Morehouse Film Festival, launching our national impact tour where we are inviting students, organizers and policymakers to join us in reimagining justice beyond prisons and jails.

The timing and location of the screening are particularly meaningful. The prison industrial complex disproportionately targets and devastates Black communities, with Black men experiencing disproportionately high rates of incarceration in the United States. Bringing The End of Isolation to Morehouse, a historically Black institution rooted in the education and leadership of Black men, invites a critical conversation about the systems that criminalize, isolate, and confine Black people, as well as the movements working to transform those systems.

The film will be followed by a Q&A with director Sarah Shourd and Pamela Winn, founder of RestoreHER. Facilitated by Sunneflower Sol 🌻 Natalie “Naee” Anderson !

The End of Isolation is an uncommonly hopeful documentary about how to fight the prison system and win.

At a time of rising fascism, this film refuses despair. Instead, it calls on audiences not only to witness resistance, but to join it.
